C&C : Future of the Tag Division?

Caprice Coleman and Cedric Alexander, sometimes but not always collectively referred to as the C&C Wrestle Factory, have been members of the Ring of Honor roster for a couple of years now.

They are a reliable team that rarely enter anything less than a good performance. Coleman in particular is a reliable hand. At thirty-five years old and trained by the Hardy Boyz during their OMEGA days it can come as a surprise just how much experience he has in the squared circle. I’d describe the C&C Wrestle Factory as “ROH’s best kept secret” if that weren’t such a trite, overused cliché of a phrase.

And yet the pair are presented as “young up-and-comers” by their primary employer. By this point, with the shallowness suffered by the tag team division last year, the two should have enjoyed some time with the tag team titles.

Of course they haven’t enjoyed any time as champions. In fact they’ve rarely even been granted title matches. At a time when the division and the roster have been thin this is peculiar. Putting the tag team championships on them would have eliminated the repetitious nature of the Briscoe reigns we’ve seen.

The title tournament we saw last year, necessitated by the departure from the promotion of Kenny King, would have been the perfect time to put the belts on C&C. They could have been presented as the new stars of the doubles scene. With just one or two new teams brought in an exciting product could have been created with very little effort.

Instead the straps were given to Steve Corino and Jimmy Jacobs. It was an uninspired and faintly boring decision that caused further stagnation of the ROH product. The eighth (and current) title reign of Mark and Jay Briscoe has done little to enliven things. It certainly hasn’t created a feeling that fans are viewing an attempt at something new.

Just because the Wrestle Factory boys haven’t yet reached the top doesn’t mean they never will. While they are still presented as a notch below the likes of the Briscoes and the American Wolves they have been permitted to look increasingly competent over the last year, to the point where it’s not inconceivable to imagine them taking the bets from ‘Dem Boys’, albeit in a bout presented as a surprise upset.

The American Wolves won’t stay as a regular combo forever, even if both men do stay with ROH long-term. They will eventually focus on their singles careers again. As for the Briscoes, they won’t remain the champions forever. Sooner or later they’ll lose those titles again. If it’s not to the Wolves,  then it could very well be to the C&C Wrestle Factory.

Future of the tag team division? Nah, Caprice Coleman and Cedric Alexander deserve better than that. They’re an integral part of the current division. And they have  to be future champions.
