Is it time for a change in the booking team?

Isn’t it about time Ring of Honor’s booking team had a shakeup?

The current unit of Jim Cornette and Hunter ‘Delirious’ Johnston have been in place since summer 2010, after previous penman Adam Pearce was relieved of his duties by Cary Silkin. Cornette wasn’t officially involved at first. Even now he is only acknowledged as an ‘executive producer’, but comments made by former ROH employees (such as Austin Aries) have made it clear that he has a lot of input.

In the two years since Delirious and Cornette started running the show they’ve done some good stuff and some bad stuff. That’s to be expected, nobody gets things right all the time. Ultimately their booking reign has be viewed as a disappointment. There are very few bankable stars at the top of the card and a lacklustre job has been done of elevating talent. As the men responsible for the direction of the product that is ultimately their fault...

I have to agree with Dave here, I think the booking is one of ROH's biggest problems at the moment. Because they do have a lot of talent on the roster, but the booking has created such an unbalanced roster. The fact that Steen has been defending the belt a lot against outsiders just proves that.

What do you guys think?

I've said before that I prefer the Pearce/Gabe eras to the Lizardman/Corny era. I really think Delirious might could provide something interesting, but creatively speaking I don't see a whole lot changing as long as Cornette's involved. He might have some success (creatively speaking) with SMW and OVW (which were both booked differently), but here I just don't think he's nailed it.

I agree with everything but the only outsider Steen has defended the Championship againist is Eddie Kingston.

Yes I do think it's time.

One thing I don't understand though is why people assume Cornette is 100% the problem. Unlike Delirious, Jim actually has a proven track record as a good booker. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Delirious was just as much at fault for the staleness of the product, if not more so than JC.

Problem is, when was this? The 80s? Sure, he booked OVW, but what was exceptional about OVW? Nothing. Cornette is decades behind. He has no business being the figure head of a promotion like ROH nowadays.

A change in attitude towards booking is needed, not a change in booking team. Firing bookers in the past has only solved short-term problems.

When you say that, do you mean the fans' attitude towards booking?

To say ROH needs new bookers is a gigantic understatement. The fed is on life support.

Cornette runs the fed exactly like SMW or OVW. SMW looked outdated when it was in business and now ROH is lifting gimmicks and angles from SMW almost twenty years later. ROH went from modern king of the indies to a dated SMW wrestling clone in the short time Cornette has had say.

Delirious might be okay on his own without Cornette's fascination with early 1980s southern wrestling, but definitely not enough long-term. At this point I'd rather see ANYBODY take over, not like the booking can get any worse, really.

I think the time isn't now, i think it was a year or so ago when interest nearly totally waned.

Of course not. However, because there are certain baffling and terrible decisions being made, some aspects of booking that previously would've been considered ok are getting criticised also.

I don't get why people act like ROH can just up and fire the new bookers and instantly get a new one, that would be better.

I'm sure there is a lot of time and effort that goes into finding a good booker

Is everyone certain that Joe Koff or/and someone else at Sinclair doesn't have a say in some of the booking decisions and maybe that's either causing or contributing to the problem? At the very least who they want to see pushed or even used for the TV?

No one's even certain how much of it's Cornette.

Let's say ROH decides to replace Cornette and Delirious has bookers, who would replace them?

Cornett was brought back at the tail end of Pearce run and it seemed like there was a real shift that only kept going once Adam was gone. Cornett has made it clear time and again in interviews he thinks wrestling is only good back in the NWA glory days and wants to book that style. ROH should fire him now and give Delirous a chance on his own.

Cornette returned just under a year before Pearce was done.
