Worst ROH Gimmick Match

Postby DBSommer » Tue Aug 07, 2012 8:51 pm

Gimmick matches are a nice way to spice up a card and give a different type of match for a feud to keep things fresh. But you have to admit every now and then they come up with some baadddd ideas (And I mean the idea itself was bad, not that the guys working it were awful). I was wondering what you thought the worst gimmick style match was for ROH.

After having just watched it at Escape From New York, I think the European Style Rules Match between Cabana and McGuinness was perhaps the worst ROH had. It had so many rules I couldn't follow them all, and there were so many stops in the action and the match felt so disjointed that it was just boring to watch.

So what gimmick style match was the worst for you?

not be a big fan of "Relaxed Rules" matches. Just seems like a cop-out to get an arbitrary DQ ending since there are still some vague rules that aren't really explained.

A match Austin Aries & Tyler Black had at Age of Insanity (2008) in Cleveland. Basically, Tyler wanted a match with Aries that was just between them (no blood/violence/interference) and a "pure scientific" contest I believe.

Sounds like something Jim Cornette would book lol

The Revolution Rules six man tag from 2009 was a really bad idea in theory and execution.

Tag Team Submission matches don't make a lot of sense. It just seems like a lazy gimmick idea for prolonging feuds.

The Steel Cage Warfare from 2008 wasn't a bad match but it made little sense with Necro Butcher participating by himself as his entire team.

The Scramble Cage Melee.

14 guys, and the only way to eliminate anyone is to jump off a cage onto them? 'Train wreck' doesn't even begin to describe it.

The issue with the Revolution Rules match is the finish went beyond suspension of disbelief, to the point it merely made Jacobs look like an idiot.

Scramble Cage works if you put a bunch of no-selling spot monkeys in the match, but is too high profile a gimmick for what were a bunch of undercard guys. On the other hand, the Scramble Cage Melee was the sort of match that gives indy wrestling a bad name.
