Cornette Sanctions ROH World Title Match Outside of ROH

Postby DXvsNWO1994 » Thu Aug 16, 2012 9:12 pm

From the 8/16 ROH Newswire...

Local Charlotte promotion, PWX returns this Saturday to the Neighborhood Theatre located at 511 E. 36th St. in Charlotte, NC. Jim Cornette made the ruling that the ROH World Championship will be defended every time Kevin Steen wrestles in an ROH ring… however Cornette has officially sanctioned an ROH World Championship match in a PWX ring! Kevin Steen faces North Carolina’s own Cedric Alexander for the ROH World Championship this Saturday!

So it looks like the Steen Storyline is continuing outside ROH. I think it's pretty obvious that Cedric won't be winning the title here, but it has the potential to be a good match.

Thoughts?

If this match turns out to be good or even great I hope they include it as a bonus match when they release "Caged Hostility" on DVD (It would be fitting since this title match is in Charlotte)

So Jim Cornette is the crooked old babyface authority figure who tries to stack the deck against the fighting champ at every turn?

And Kevin Steen is the brave heel who heroically fights the odds, attacks fans, speaks truth to power, beats up the lame babyfaces, and stands up against the terrible wrestling company that fans are supposed to love and support and give money to?

I'm ready for Gabe to come back now.

Eddie, Mondo, Homicide and Kingston are lame babyfaces? This is new to me.

Burnside kind of has a point. If they want Steen to be heel, they're gonna have to drastically change how they present him. And probably just completely take Cornette out of the equation.
Taking a stand since 2012.

Much like El Generico since June 2011, they are all hapless, ineffectual dupes for cool heel Steen to constantly outwit and beat up in a fair fight.

I would say so, compared to Steen all four of them are indeed lame.

That will hopefully change as soon as Elgin turns face completely ;)

The problem with trying to package Steen as a heel falls with Cornette (the character). Right now, Steen is the SCSA type character... though instead of being the pissed off blue collar working guy (or so WWE revisionists will describe him), Steen is this apathetic sociopath whose whole goal is try to destroy professional wrestling. It writes itself, let guys come out and challenge Steen while defending the industry (hence why the program with Kingston has been so compelling). Right now it just looks like the boss trying as hard as he can to regain control of his company. The problem is nobody likes the boss, so they will continue cheering for Steen regardless.

Gabe booked the exact same thing when AOTF won the tag belts, just as he booked The Prophecy as faces in their feud with the SCS, even though The Prophecy were the ones doing all the heelish acts in the feud.

The grass isn't always greener, y'know.

Not exactly. When AOTF won the belts, they were heels and there was no crooked authority figure. With the Prophecy, you're pretty dead on except the SCS weren't doing a whole lot of face things themselves in the build to that feud. And TBF, the one time Gabe did the crooked authority figure, Corny was the heel and Homicide the face.

I think we can all agree, but maybe not, that Corny should be the heel here and Steen the face.

The problem is that Cornette can't play a face - his demeanor and delivery have always been heelish (even when he was booked as a face commissioner during in 2005-6) or, at the very least, unsympathetic.

The angle would've worked better if they placed Corino in Cornette's on-screen role during his Evilholics Anonymous period. Corino can play a sympathetic role and there would be more frisson between the two in promos and Newswires.

Just got back from the PWX show in Charlotte. Steen successfully retained the ROH title against Cedric (big surprise). It was a pretty entertaining match. They announced that it was Cedric's birthday and, since he is local, his family came out in full force to cheer him on. Steen had fun jawing with all of them during the match.

After the match, PWX played a video of Matt Hardy challenging Steen to a match on October 5th. Matt looked as sober as always in the video. The audio was bad, so I could not tell if it was going to be another 'outside' ROH title match.

On the undercard, Mike Bennett lost to Caleb Konley in a decent match and Steve Corino defeated a local kid (didn't catch his name). Steve tried, but the kid was very green. Steve's running commentary during the match was hilarious.

It's not just Cornette (although the overall creative for the past year-plus has been generally quite bad, for which Cornette and Delirious both deserve blame). Steen also doesn't want to be a genuine heel, or else flat-out doesn't understand what he's doing wrong. He does so many things that seemed designed to get face pops that it looks like he's deliberately wrecking the angle.

Example:

In March, Kevin Steen, alleged heel, is informed by Jim Cornette that his archenemy, El Generico, is returning after a three-month absence recovering from a beating Steen gave him. Generico wants revenge and Cornette has booked him versus Steen in a no-holds-barred match at the upcoming iPPV. This should be a relatively big moment, but Steen couldn't be more visibly bored, literally making "yap, yap, yap, I don't care" gestures and leaning listlessly on the ropes as Cornette announces the return of his sworn nemesis.

In order to put the angle over and not make Generico look like a total non-entity, Steen might show some fear, consternation, or at least a flicker of emotional interest that this match is going to happen. But no, that would be so uncool.

That moment should have been something like Foley putting the Cactus Jack t-shirt on against HHH. Instead, it was nothing. That was Steen's fault, not Cornette.

Elgin gets a little bit less over every week. I'm concerned about where he'll be by October.

Agreed. I really wish they would have pulled the trigger on Elgin/Cole around this time last year, because I feel like they could be legitimate main eventers right now.
