A Hardy Champ

As already reported here on ROH World, the April 6th TV taping saw a heavily stipulated match announced for Border Wars. Two members of SCUM will face Jay Lethal and Michael Elgin. Should ‘Black Machismo’ and ‘Unbreakable’ win then Steve Corino, the driving force of SCUM, will be banished from Ring of Honor. Should the SCUM competitors win then Steve Corino will not only remain with ROH but he will also be installed as a member of the commentary team.

An additional, and more important, stipulation is that Matt Hardy will be granted a shot at Jay Briscoe’s ROH world championship should SCUM win.

This presents a very clear storyline option. SCUM could win and earn ‘The Self-Proclaimed Icon’ and new centrepiece of the faction Matt Hardy a shot at the world title. Best in the World would be a suitable time for that match. Hardy could defeat Briscoe and gloat about how he was only ever going to be a flash in the pan that was no match for a sports entertainer.

Matchmaker Nigel McGuinness could spend the summer sending the top names at his disposal after Hardy and the ROH championship. Matches with Elgin, Lethal, Richards, Edwards, the Briscoes, and Cole unsuccessfully challenging ‘The Sensei of Mattitude’ would be great for TV and pay-per-views. Rematches and tags would be good for DVD tapings.

Eventually, with all of his other options exhausted, McGuinness would be forced to call on Kevin Steen to try and regain the championship from Hardy in the name of ROH. Final Battle could arrive and the war between ROH and SCUM could take in Hardy versus Steen for the championship. ‘Mr Wrestling’ could become a two time champion and all would be right with the world.

Of course the other good thing about this proposed scenario is that it would give us Steve Corino on commentary. I can’t see how that would be a bad thing. Because, y’know, Caleb Seltzer leaves a lot to be desired.
