(September 24, 1973 – November 22, 2011)
As many of you will have heard by now, Bison Smith, real name Mark Smith, passed away yesterday.
Bison was a truly impressive specimen. He was a formidable force whenever he stepped inside the ring and impressed whenever he did so. Bison was mostly known for his work in Puerto Rico and Japan but did feature in Ring of Honor for a large chunk of 2009 and into 2010.
Many people will remember Bison for his dominating victories and his powerful moveset which used to strike fear into all of his opponents. He initially joined ROH and attacked wrestlers at his peril – including ROH favourite Bryan Danielson. He later joined The Embassy faction and was involved in great matches including wars against the likes of Kevin Steen & El Generico, Danielson and Colt Cabana. He also featured on the ROH on HDNet TV show.
Bison was a former college football player at the University of Colorado and could have succeeded in almost anything he chose to do because of his sheer size, strength and physical presence.
Tragically, Bison passed away yesterday in Puerto Rico while getting ready for a World Wrestling Council event this weekend. He was just 38 and this comes after the loss of Larry Sweeney earlier this year – yet another tragic loss to professional wrestling.
R.I.P Big Man.
