When RD Evans was introduced to Ring of Honor it was as the legal advisor to Prince Nana’s Embassy faction. Anyone familiar with other wrestling promotions (most notably CHIKARA) would have been aware that RD had form as an in-ring performer, but that wasn’t acknowledged by ROH. As far as they were concerned he was a kayfabe lawyer and a kayfabe lawyer only.
When his schemes to steal Nana’s cash were revealed last year it seemed Evans was gaining a more prominent role, replacing the Prince as a heel manager. It wasn’t too drastic a move though. He had his profile raised but he still wasn’t wrestling.
Then Final Battle came.
There ‘The Barrister’ made his official in-ring debut for Ring of Honor, taking on supposed fellow non-worker Nana in a comedy grudge match. As the storyline goes that got RD into the idea of wrestling and so he started wrestling for a full-time career. Which has led him, neatly, to his current tag team partnership with his sole remaining client QT Marshall.
‘God’s Gift’ has benefited from the move just as much as Evans has. He’s decent in the ring but he’s not exactly someone who’s going to set the wrestling world on fire. He is especially not going to set a company like Ring of Honor on fire.
Prior to being teamed with Evans, Marshall didn’t really have a clear role in the company. Tag team work seems the best thing for him, and being paired up with the over the top Evans character allows him to play the straight man. Which it turns out he’s surprisingly good at.
I like the pairing. With intense and serious teams like the American Wolves, the Briscoes, reDRagon, and C&C stocking the ranks ROH can afford to have a more comedic duo on the books. In fact not only can they afford it but it provides a nice change of pace. Not every match has to be a match of the year contender. Sometimes an audience needs an excuse to laugh, and that’s what QT and RD provide.
