Relentless (5/18/13) Review

Michael Elgin vs Kyle Matthews

Elgin uses his power advantage early to get a quick near fall following a powerslam. He once again uses his strength to belly-to-belly suplex Matthews over the ropes and to the floor. Elgin holds him up in a vertical suplex for a full minute before sending him crashing to the mat. Matthews sends Elgin to the floor and connects with a suicide dive. Elgin misses a spinning senton, which allows Matthews to lock in an octopus hold. Elgin fights out of it and hits two consecutive deadlift German suplexes. Matthews almost steals the match with a jack knife pin, but then he eats a backfist and an Elgin Bomb for Elgin to pick up the pinfall victory.

Winner by Pinfall: Michael Elgin

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts:  This match was almost nothing but Elgin on offense, and that’s all it should have been. Elgin looked very good in the match manhandling the smaller Matthews. Matthews looked pretty decent, too, and I wouldn’t be against seeing more of him in the future. This was a decent opener but it wasn’t anything special.

Adam Page vs Adam Cole

After an even start, Cole sends Page to the outside and follows it up with a huge suicide dive. They trade blows in the middle of the ring and Page gets the advantage with a powerslam. Cole fights back with a neckbreaker for a two count. Page hits a spinning neckbreaker from the top rope and Cole slides to the floor. Page gets on the apron and connects with a standing shooting star attack onto Cole on the floor. Page goes for another move off the top rope and Cole catches him with a sick super kick! That was insane! Cole connects with a superkick to the back of his head and hits the Florida Key to pick up the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Adam Cole

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This match was a lot of fun. Page has been extremely impressive during his sporadic appearances during the past year or so. The superkick off the top rope was one of the craziest things I’ve seen in a long time. Cole was great as always and looked awesome in this match. This was just a very entertaining 15 minute  match and well worth checking out.

Roderick Strong vs Mark Briscoe

The two exchange submission holds before having a standoff a few minutes into the match. Briscoe sends Strong to the outside and connects with a dropkick through the ropes. Strong hits a picture perfect dropkick before locking in an abdominal stretch. Briscoe fires back with Redneck Kung Fu. A fisherman buster gets a two count for Briscoe. Strong connects with a double knee gutbuster but Briscoe is able to kick out at two. They exchange a flurry of pin attemps and Briscoe is able to counter one into the winning pin attempt.

Winner by Pinfall: Mark Briscoe

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This match took a little while to get going. It seemed like Strong and Briscoe were just going through the motions for most of the match, which made the action kind of dull for the most part. It picked up toward the end and made it an ok match. But it was still disappointing considering who was in the ring against each other.

Chris LeRusso vs Tommaso Ciampa

Ciampa immediately brings the attack to LeRusso. He connects with a series of knee strikes and picks up the pin.

Winner by Pinfall: Tommaso Ciampa

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This was nothing but a squash to reestablish Ciampa after his return from injury. Nothing to see here.

Rhett Titus and Cliff Compton vs The American Wolves

The Wolves storm the ring and the fight is immediately on. Titus hits a bulldog on Richards across Compton’s knee, which allows S.C.U.M. to dominate the action. Richards throws Titus into Compton and dropkicks the latter, which causes him to DDT Titus. Richards tags in Edwards who enters like a house of fire and almost picks up the win with a fisherman buster. S.C.U.M. hits a superplex and splash combo and almost pick up the win on Richards, but Edwards breaks up the pin. Richards locks in the ankle lock while Edwards simultaneously locks in the Achilles Lock, and S.C.U.M. has no choice but to tap.

Winners by Submission: The American Wolves

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This was your typical S.C.U.M. tag team match. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything good. It was bland and just kind of there for the most part. They don’t do anything excited, which makes most of their offense pretty boring. This was the American Wolves worst match since reforming, which is a shame. The S.C.U.M. angle is good, but the in-ring action doesn’t match up.

Steve Corino gets in the ring and announces that Matt Hardy will get his title shot at the TV taping June 23. He challenges Nigel McGuinness to a 4 on 4 match, where if ROH wins then S.C.U.M. disbands. But if S.C.U.M. wins, Corino becomes matchmaker.

ROH World Tag Team Champions reDRagon and ROH World TV Champion Matt Taven vs C&C Wrestle Factory and Jay Lethal

The non-champions start the match off fast and they all hit suicide dives in unison. The champions get control of the match and work over Lethal. He fights off Taven and tags in Alexander who hits a nice series of moves, including a split legged moonsault. He and Coleman hit an awesome combination of double team moves on Fish. Taven hits a frog splash on Alexander but Lethal breaks up the pin. Every wrestler hits a flurry of moves and Lethal finishes it up with a Lethal Combination. C&C hit the Overtime on O’Reilly and they pick up the win!

Winners by Pinfall: C&C Wrestle Factory and Jay Lethal

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This match was so much fun. The action really picked up down the stretch after Lethal made the hot tag and all six men were flying all over the place. This acted as a sort of preview for “Best in the World 2013” for the two title matches, and if the matches at the iPPV are anything like this, the show is going to be great. This match was awesome, as would be expected with six wrestlers the caliber of the ones who wrestled here.

Jimmy Jacobs vs Kevin Steen

Jacobs meets Steen on the aisle way and the brawl in on. Jacobs uses his chain to choke Steen and refuses to let go and is DQ’d. Steen fights off officials and challenges Jaocbs to a No DQ match.

The match is back on and Steen launches an official over the top rope onto S.C.U.M. Jacobs whips Steen into a chair lodged in the corner and follows it up with a spear. Steen powerbombs Jacobs onto the corner of the ring frame and then connects with a Swanton Bomb. Jacobs counters a move into a Contra Code onto a steel chair. Jacobs brings a barricade into the ring. Steen hits the F Cinq, but Jacobs kicks out at two. Jacobs plants Steen onto the barricade. Steen low blows Jacobs and then hits the package piledriver on the barricade to pick up the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Kevin Steen

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This match was awesome and exactly what you would expect out of Steen and Jacobs. It was smart to make this a No DQ as it gave them more freedom to continue the story of Steen’s hatred for S.C.U.M. There were some brutal spots throughout the match; none moreso than the package piledriver at the end. This was a very intense match.

ROH World Title
ROH World Champion Jay Briscoe defends vs BJ Whitmer

Tempers begin to flare after a feeling out process and they brawl on the floor. Whitmer his a leg lariat and sends the champion to the outside before hitting a big suicide dive. They slug it out in the middle of the ring and Whitmer gets a two count following a powerslam. Briscoe hits an awesome over-the-top neckbreaker from the second rope. Briscoe launches Whitmer over the top through a ringside table! Whitmer looked like he went head first through the table. That was sick! Briscoe hits the Jay Driller, but Whitmer kicks out! An exploder suplex gets a two count for the challenger. Briscoe locks in the dragon sleeper and Whitmer passes out in the hold.

Winner and STILL ROH World Champion: Jay Briscoe

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: The action in the closing minutes of this match was crazy. Whitmer crashing through the table was one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen in wrestling. He fell right on his head, and then he continued fighting. Whitmer is one of the toughest men in wrestling. Briscoe had a good showing as champion, which makes up for the disappointing match he had at “Border Wars 2013.” This was a good main event to cap off a quality show.

Final Thoughts: “Relentless” was a consistently good show from start to finish. The undercard was entertaining and kept the show flowing, while the second half featured several very good matches. The six man tag team match was the match of the night, but there were a couple of other matches that were near its quality. This show was filmed to be aired as Road Rage episodes of ROH on SBG, and this is going to be great on television. But if you can’t wait for it to air on tv, there is enough good stuff on here to make it a recommendation to order.
