ROH 09/9/17 TV Review:The Kingdom vs The Briscoes

This week was the second episode from the set of tapings from Center Stage Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Ian Riccaboni and BJ Whitmer were on commentary to start the show.
First Match: Adam Page vs. Kenny King
The two were even to start until the action spilled to the outside, with Page jumping up on the stage and missing with a moonsault. King capitalized by twisting off the apron with a tornillo before the break. Once the action returned, King was in control back inside the ring, but Page hit a piledriver and then followed King outside and tossed him into the barricade. While Page worked King over, Coleman joined commentary and was downright jubilant. He announced that he would have the Briscoes on Coleman’s Puplit next week, remind the fans to tweet the hashtag. In the meantime, King was able to hit a spinebuster for separation and later avoided a buckshot clothesline before eventually hitting the Royal Flush to pick up the pinfall victory. Average match here, everything was done well, but it lacked a bit of intensity despite the good spots throughout.
Winner: Kenny King
Second Match: Marty Scurll vs. Rocky Romero
After some disrespect from Scurll during the code of honor the bout opened with control flipping back and forth. Scurll busted out new offense during the match and it gave this bout a sense of of truly being up in the air as to who would win. Romero hit a shining wizard for two, and when that didn’t work, switched his focus on to Scurll’s arm. Just as it seemed that Romero would win with the Diablo armbar,Scurll fought him off and won after hitting a modified driver for the pinfall. Really fresh offense and match from Scurll here and commentary did well to remind the viewers that Romero has a relationship with Chuckie T, giving the match more than an exhibition feel.
Winner: Marty Scurll
A Suzuki promo aired before Cody came down to the ring and said the title just isn’t him. He called someone out to the ring and unveiled an actual Ring of Honor, which he quickly donned and then asks the crowd who would be the first to kiss the ring.
A Death Before Dishonor video packaged aired next, with a number of short promos from participants, nicely building to the PPV. The Motor City Machine Guns particularly had a strong promo, speaking about how the ROH World Tag Team Championships are something that have eluded them.
Main Event:
The Briscoes vs. The Kingdom (Vinny Marseglia & TK O’Ryan)
Bully Ray joined commentary, speaking about how he and the Briscoes are on the same page again. Jay and O’Ryan squared off, but the Sassy Horse quickly tagged out to Marseglia who almost immediately was on the receiving end of a Jay knee to the face. Mark tagged in and used his bandana to choke O’Ryan as Whitmer commented that the Kingdom looked lost without Taven, highlighting his leadership skills and what he means to the team. A blind tag by Marseglia gave the Kingdom control and they used it to their advantage, catching Mark with a spinebuster/flying headbutt combo that really displayed their familiarity as a tag team. Mark eventually made the hot tag to Jay who cleared house, but was nearly smacked with a chair. He intercepted it and went to deliver a Jay Driller to O’Ryan on the chair, but Sinclair pulled it away before he could.
Marseglia recovered and threw Mark off the top rope, allowing TK to hit a low blow on Jay. He and Marseglia combined for a neckbreaker/Redrum senton combo, but Jay was able to kick out. O’Ryan tagged in and brought the bat with him, but Mark dodged the swing and a Jay Driller later the Briscoes were victorious. Strong segment to end the show, establishing how important Taven is to his team and how that will change the dynamic of their match at the PPV.
Winner: The Briscoes
Final Reaction: B
A good last episode before the PPV, every match and segment worked to hype the show. Commentary was strong throughout, especially in the second match, reminding viewers of the ties between Romero and Chuckie T. Scurll show versatility during this match and the addition of a new finisher adds a layer of unpredictability to his normal match structure, at least in terms of Ring of Honor. King continues to look strong heading into the feel good story of his title shot in his hometown and the tag team main event was showed that both sides are willing to do anything it takes to reclaim the 6 man tag titles.
