ROH 10/21/17 TV Review: 4 Way Survival For TV Title Shot

ROH 10/21/17 TV Review: 4 Way Survival For TV Title Shot
09/23/17
Sam’s Town
Las Vegas, Nevada

This week was the third episode from the set of tapings from after Death before Dishonor at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ian Riccaboni and Colt Cabana were on commentary to start the show.

Video package of Kenny King saying he would defend all comers, before a number of possible challengers came to the ring, including Shane Taylor, Punishment Martinez, Mark Briscoe and Chuckie T. This was done to set up a match for a spot in a future ROH TV title match.

First Match: Marty Scurll vs. Jay White
The match was hyped as being a dream match between two great, young wrestlers and as the match started, commentary really put both men over. To their credit, the match started as a chain wrestling display, with very little down time. The two moved at a blistering pace until White slowed things down by locking on a full Muta lock, only for Scurll to break the hold by reaching the ropes. Scurll was able to gain the advantage before the break and upon the return was able to apply an octopus stretch, transitioning in  standing chicken wing. White was eventually able to break the hold, but Scurll tossed his umbrella at White. As the referee grabbed the foreign object, Scurll kicked White below the belt and rolled him up for the three count. Really fun match between these two in a matchup we haven’t seen before. White has become a real important part of ROH and it feels as his time may be running out with the company. Until then, it;ll be a treat to see him in matches such as this one.

Winner: Marty Scurll

Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian cut a short promo on Jay Lethal and KUSHIDA, building to their upcoming match. Kazarian recommended that KUSHIDA go find Doc Brown and travel back to 1955.

Short promo from Jay Lethal during which he calls out the Addiction for being anti-ROH and that he plans to avenge his loss at the Honor Rumble.

The Dawgs (Rhett Titus) vs. The Tempura Boyz (Sho & Yo)
The Dawgs came to the ring wearing Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas-style clothing, sporting Hawaiian shirts and a fisherman’s hat atop Ferrara’s head. The Tempura Boyz ran into the ring and brought the fight to the Dawgs immediately, briefly overwhelmed before gaining the advantage. The Dawgs have been working effectively in a quasi-comedy role, with Titus essentially bullying his friend around to the team’s advantage, despite frustrating Ferrara. The work is formulaic, yet entertaining. In the end, Ferrara thwarted the Tempura Boyz double team move, shoving Yo from the top. He hit a BLL on Yo and then he and Titus combined to hit Who Let the Dawgs out, a front suplex/high cross body combination for the win.

Winner: The Dawgs

Main Event: Winner Earns ROH World TV title Shot
Punishment Martinez vs. Shane Taylor vs. Chuckie T vs. Mark Briscoe
Caprice Coleman joined commentary for the match.Chuckie and Martinez started the match. Chuckie took a knife edge chop from martinez and tagged out immediately to Briscoe, who took it to Martinez with some redneck kung-fu, only to be floored with one single punch. Chuckie tagged himself in, as did Shane Taylor and he quickly slammed his estranged brother to the mat. Things broke down a bit, leaving Martinez and Taylor to square off in the ring and size each other up, but each time they went to engage, they were interrupted.Martinez and Taylor did finally get to square off and they floored each other with simultaneous clotheslines. Both men followed by missing each other with splashes, allowing Briscoe and Chuck to reinsert themselves into the match. The action spilled out and Martinez took advantage, hitting Journey into Darkness, his tope to the outside. Taylor knocked Martinez off his perch on the top rope, leaving him laying. Chuck took Taylor out with a piledriver and Briscoe hit a Death Valley Driver before climbing on martinez to hit a Froggy-bow for the win. Jay Briscoe came down to the ring and argued with his brother about Mark’s commitment to the team as the show went off the air.

Winner: Mark Briscoe

Final Reaction:B-
A good episode this week, but nothing particularly special. The tease of Taylor and Punishment Martinez is an interesting one and when the two finally do clash in an extended program, the two are going really impress people. The Dawgs vs the Tempura Boyz is likely the last time we see the Tempura Boyz, as they now are Roppongi Vice 3k in NJPW and if they do return, it would be in a different role. Overall, the episode followed the groundwork laid beforehand, especially with the ending of the show and if there was one match to watch, it would be the fatal fourway.
