ROH 7/13/18 TV Review: 6-Man Tag Team Gauntlet

ROH 7/13/18 TV Review: 6-Man Tag Team Gauntlet
06/02/18
Hammerstein Ballroom
NYC, NY

This week was the fourth episode from the set of tapings from NYC, NY. A Kingdom promo kicked the show off, with the three complaining that there is a gauntlet match to determine the number one contenders, meanwhile they had to fight to get back what was always theirs to begin with. The segment ended with Taven reminding us that he’s Matt Taven and that they will not lose the titles.

Ian Riccaboni and Colt Cabana were on commentary and welcomed everyone to show.

First Match: Kelly Klein vs. Jenny Rose
Rose was in control early, getting some early near falls in until Klein tossed her mouth guard at Todd Sinclair. The distraction allowed her to catch Rose with an elbow and yanked on some hair before flinging Rose to the mat. Klein played with Rose, choosing to pin her nonchalantly before pie-facing Rose repeatedly. Rose fought out of a fireman’s carrying and hit a code break before beating Klein about diagonal corners. A spear by Rose led to a very near fall, but she was sent stumbling with a knee before Klein locked on the End of the Match. Rose tried to valiantly fight her way out, but eventually succumb to the submission hold. A bit of a slow-paced match between the two here, with Klein showing vulnerability and Rose continuing to be a bit more vicious as she began to do when she was feuding with Sakai.

Winner: Kelly Klein

A backstage segment featuring the Dawgs on their search for enough money to hire Shane Taylor. They ambushed Cody while he was on the phone. They directly asked for money, listing why he wouldn’t have cash on him, specifically that it’s 2018 and he’s funding a show. Ferrara and Titus spoke about how Marty Scurll probably had money and this immediately prompted Cody to suddenly find an envelope full of cash that he threw on the couch before leaving the Dawgs to swim in their newfound wealth.

Main Event: 6-Man Tag Team Gauntlet -Winner Earns Tag Title Shot
The Kingdom, mainly Matt Taven joined commentary for this one. Both Marseglia and TK. O’Ryan were there, but weren’t mic’ed up, so anything they said had to be picked up off of someone’s headset.
Shane Taylor & The Dawgs vs Gresham, Shelley & LSG
LSG and Taylor start off, with LSG avoiding Taylor early but falling victim to the size difference. Gresham and Rhett were in next and Gresham was able to take control and tag Shelley in, but the Dawgs took control quickly and worked him over. Fun opener to the match here, with LSG  hitting a tightrope walk Phoenix Splash to the outside. Ferrara went for the BLL, but LSG was able to duck the move and roll him up for the pinfall victory.

Silas Young, The Punchers (BCB & Milonas) in next.
Early domination, but Bruiser hit Milonas with a drop kick by mistake. Gresham and Young exchanged a thousand waist locks, but BCB held him from the outside as Milonas crushed Gresham. Hot tag to LSG, but he was cut off quickly and almost flattened by a Milonas leg drop off the second. Shelley thwarted the Last Call and LSG hit a 450 for the pin to stay alive.
SoCal Uncensored were in next.
Alex Shelley was taken to the back with an apparent injury during the match and taken to the back, leaving LSG and Gresham outnumbered. LSG fought back valiantly, but the numbers were simply too much to overcome and the Addiction finished him off with Celebrity rehab, making way for the final team.
King, Chuck Taylor and Eli Isom game out next.
SCU was largely in control of this one and gave off a very arrogant demeanor during this one. The Kingdom were rooting against SCU, claiming the team wrongly had their titles and didn’t feel that SCU deserved to earn a title shot. In the end, Isom was left alone with Daniels, who went for an Angels wings but Isom reversed it into a pinning bridge for the upset victory. This was a fun way to run the show, a couple of rag-tag teams were included in this due to Shaheem Ali’s injury and Chris Sabin being in Japan for the Best of the Super Juniors tournament. Isom, King and Taylor winning was a bit of shock here- they had never teamed beforehand and the story here was that Trent’s injury prevented him from being in the match, giving Isom a spot. Although the trio is unlikely to unseat the Kingdom, it was a good concept for the last episode of NYC and established a match further down the line that did not need the fallout of the Best in the World PPV to bolster the match in any way.

Winner: Taylor, King & Isom

Final Reaction: B-/C+
This was an average show on paper that gave a number of underutilized talents a chance to perform in what was an exciting match concept. LSG, Gresham and Shelley worked well together here and both LSG and Gresham came away from this looking strong. It’s unclear if they will ever team together again, but both were given a platform to show what they had and of the two, LSG was definitely given more here. Isom scoring the pin of a Grand Slam champion showed that the company has some high hopes for him and he performed well here in his role. King and  Chuck Taylor’s were comical and definitely ingratiated themselves to the fans in NYC. The match exposed in some ways the lack of consistent trios the company has truly has, as the main storyline heading into this was the Dawgs trying to pay Shane Taylor off to join their squad. A bit of interference from Josh Woods could have furthered along Taylor’s issues with him in a way that made more sense than simply having Ferrara take the loss here. Overall, the show was a fun one and the gauntlet match is worth a watch.
