Ring of Honor will tonight put on its 9th Anniversary Show in Chicago. The company, who recently celebrated its 9th birthday, have a crammed card lined up for tonight’s show which will be broadcast live on iPPV on www.gofightlive.tv. I will now take a detailed look at each of tonight’s matches.
ROH World Championship
Roderick Strong (c) w/Truth Martini vs. Homicide
After years of going after the biggest prize in ROH, Roderick Strong finally fulfilled his dream after beating Tyler Black at Glory By Honor IX. His celebrations were cut short though by Homicide as “The Notorious 187” made his return to ROH and made it clear that he was coming for the World Title. Homicide lost the belt in 2007 and never got a rematch, something which he has stressed to Executive Producer Jim Cornette and eventually Cornette gave in and made Homicide #1 contender. Homicide is still undefeated since his return including wins over the likes of Kevin Steen, the Briscoe Brothers and Christopher Daniels. Strong has defied many people who saw him as a transitional champion and heads into his fifth title defence coming off a controversial win against El Generico last month. His best defence so far must be his victory against Davey Richards at Final Battle 2010 which even Strong’s critics must have found impressive. A couple of weeks ago on ROH on HDNet, Homicide embarrassed Strong and this past week it was announced that this match will be contested under street fight rules which surely gives Homicide the advantage. Strong can always ask for help off Martini and the new House of Truth member Michael Elgin if he gets in trouble and all these variables mean that this match can be a classic.
ROH Tag Team Championship
The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli) (c)
vs. The All Night Express (Rhett Titus & Kenny King)
The Kings recently broke the Briscoes record and have now held the ROH Tag Team Championship for over 320 days, defeating every team put in their path in the process. The All Night Express have always been a dangerous team but recently started to focus more on business and less on pleasure. This change in mood has helped propel them to the top of the tag team division and they will get their title match against the Kings at the 9th Anniversary Show. King and Titus won the title shot a few months ago against Colt Cabana and El Generico and have really kicked on since then. In recent broadcasts of ROH on HDNet, the two teams have really squared off against each other and this past week, they exchanged singles victories. Castagnoli defeated Titus but King managed to beat Chris Hero before the Kings attacked the challengers after the match, giving them the advantage going into their title match. Will the ANX be able to dethrone the Kings or will the best tag team in wrestling today continue their reign?
ROH World Television Title – Christopher Daniels © vs. Eddie Edwards
From March 2010 until December 2010, Edwards reigned as the first and only ROH World Television Champion. That was of course until “The Fallen Angel” beat him at a ROH on HDNet TV taping. The match initially went to a 15 minute time limit draw but Edwards refused to retain the title that way and requested five extra minutes. He was granted his wish but Daniels hit the Angels Wings and got the win to become new TV Champion and mark his first singles title ever in ROH. Daniels said that Edwards deserved a rematch and the former champ requested a longer match. He added that he might have beaten him once, but nobody beats Eddie Edwards twice in one night and asked for a two-out-of-three falls match which was granted by Jim Cornette. With thirty minutes to play with, these two men should put on a brilliant match if their previous matches are anything to go by.
Dream Tag Team Match
The Briscoe Brothers (Mark & Jay Briscoe)
vs. World’s Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas)
When you mention Ring of Honor to somebody, they will almost instantly think of the Briscoes. The pair have been with ROH since the beginning and are undoubtedly the team every other tag team measures themselves up against in ROH. The brothers, who are six time ROH Tag Team Champions, will face off against a team that is well known across the globe – the World’s Greatest Tag Team. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin have wrestled all over the world and have now ended up in ROH. They made it clear that they were coming after the ROH Tag Team Titles and debuted in a losing effort against the Kings of Wrestling at Glory by Honor IX. Whoever wins this match will be in the hot seat for the next shot at the ROH Tag Team Titles so will the Briscoes go a step closer to making it seven reigns or will Benjamin & Haas show their experience and get the win?
Special Attraction – Colt Cabana vs. Davey Richards
This might look like a mismatch but it should still end up being a fantastic match. Cabana has said that he is looking to glorify the art of Pro Wrestling and just wants to put on good wrestling matches which often includes his own bit of comedy. Richards won’t be interested in laughing though as he battles back after his disappointing loss to Roderick Strong at Final Battle 2010. Richards says that he isn’t strong enough to challenge for the ROH World Title just yet but he will prepare for his next title shot and starts tonight against Colt Cabana. Richards also said that if he loses his next title shot, he will never challenge for the title again. Richards is regarded as one of the best wrestlers in the world today but faces a tough task in beating Cabana in front of his home town crowd.
Special Challenge Match – Michael Elgin vs. El Generico
Elgin recently joined the House of Truth and was given a hit-list by ROH world Champion Roderick Strong. Last night it was Christopher Daniels and tonight he takes on El Generico. Elgin is known for giving out punishment but Generico knows all too well what it’s like to take lots of punishment after his bitter feud with former friend Kevin Steen. The Generic Luchador is apparently close to getting a title shot in the near future and if he puts on a good performance against Elgin, this could persuade ROH officials to put him in a match for the belt, something which has eluded Generico so far during his ROH career.
Women of Honor – Sara Del Rey vs. MsChif
“The Queen of Wrestling” faces off against an opponent that is unlike any she has faced in the recent past. MsChif put Daizee Haze on the shelf for a good few months and has made it clear that she wishes to dominate here in ROH and looks well equipped to do so. Del Rey, who has battled with Haze in recent times, faces off against somebody who if anything is more aggressive than she is, something which she won’t find to often. Whoever wins this match will certainly have bragging rights over the other in what should be a smash mouth kind of affair.
Four Corner Survival – Steve Corino vs. Kyle O’Reilly vs. Grizzly Redwood vs. Mike Bennett w/Bob Evans
Steve Corino is on a mission to change people’s perception of him. He says he has learnt from the demise of Kevin Steen and blames himself for it and has assured that it will never happen again. He has recently become involved in the Top Prospects Tournament and will face off against three men who feature in the competition. O’Reilly is already through to the second round of the tournament and forms a formidable tag-team with Adam Cole. Grizzly Redwood is fans favourite and will be looking to chop down his opponents to gain a victory that would really give him some momentum going into the Top Prospects Tournament. Mike Bennett, the final competitor, doesn’t give a damn about anybody else in the company and hasn’t exactly endeared himself to the ROH faithful. Alongisde his trainer “Bullet Bob”, Bennett has made a big impression so far in ROH but for all the wrong reasons. But it doesn’t matter how disrespectful “The Prodigy” is as he is getting the job done and that’s all that matters. Will Corino’s new attitude affect this match or will the younger guys take centre stage?
As you can see, it’s shaping up to be a brilliant show. To order the iPPV, go to:www.gofightlive.tv. Enjoy!
