Ring of Honor and CHIKARA team up April 28 in Chicago Ridge, Ill. when they present “Synergy.” The two companies will share the Frontier Fieldhouse with CHIKARA’s event, “Hot Off the Griddle,” beginning at 2 p.m. and Ring of Honor’s event, “Unity,” at 7:30 p.m. Although it is unclear whether the two companies will work together after “Synergy,” fans are excited by the prospect of watching matches that pit the two companies against each other. So far one match between the two companies has been announced. CHIKARA’s Hallowicked and Jigsaw will challenge Jay and Mark Briscoe for the ROH Tag Team Titles at “Unity.” Although that is the only match announced thus far, there are many interpromotional matches fans want to see. These are the top five Ring of Honor vs CHIKARA matches I would like to see.
For the sake of realism, I’m leaving CHIKARA wrestlers who are under a Dragon Gate USA contract since they would be unable to appear on a Ring of Honor show. I’m also intentionally leaving out El Generico, the Young Bucks and Grizzly Redwood since they all make frequent appearances for CHIKARA. Each wrestler is only going to be used once, so even though there are wrestlers in both companies I’d love to see multiple wrestlers in the other they are only going to appear once.
These matches are in no particular order.
1. Mike Quackenbush vs TJ Perkins
Mike Quackenbush is known as “The Master of 1,000 Holds,” and there is a good reason for that. Quackenbush is a master of virtually every style of professional wrestling and often shows it off during his matches. He has a move for every situation and a counter to anything his opponent attempts. Perkins would offer a unique challenge to Quackenbush. Perkins is a great technical wrestler and a mat technician. He is also no slouch in the striking game either. It would be very interesting to see the technical wrestling chess game these two wrestlers would play as the match progressed. Given enough time, this match could be a classic.
2. Future Shock vs The Colony (Fire Ant and Soldier Ant)
These are two fast-paced and high-flying teams. Their styles would mesh perfectly and would make for an extremely fun match. Both teams have competed for their respective company’s tag titles in the past year, and Fire Ant and Soldier Ant won the prestigious 2011 King of Trios with their partner Green Ant. Future Shock and The Colony are two talented young tag teams that would make for an exciting match that would leave fans on the edge of their seats.
3. Eddie Edwards vs Eddie Kingston
There are no other wrestlers in the world with more heart than Eddie Edwards and Eddie Kingston. Edwards has shown his heart time after time by competing through injury and always getting back up after getting knocked down. Kingston has shown his heart by winning CHIKARA’s “12 Large: Summit” tournament in 2011 to become the company’s first ever Grand Champion with a bad leg. Edwards is a hard striker and a very good technical wrestler. As hard as Edwards hits, however, Kingston hits that much harder. This match would be a war of two men who do not have the word quit in their vocabulary. The only way one of these two wrestlers would win would be to knock the other wrestler out because neither wrestler would stop fighting as long as they could get back up.
4. Roderick Strong vs Icarus
There is one reason I want this match to happen. Roderick Strong chops really hard. Icarus, who is often referred to as “The Worst in the World” by CHIKARA faithful, screams like a little girl when chopped. Therefore, Icarus would cry like a baby after suffering a chop from Strong. There is just something about Icarus that makes me happy when he gets beaten up, and Strong would be the perfect opponent to do so.
5. Kevin Steen vs UltraMantis Black
Kevin Steen refers to himself as the “Antichrist of Ring of Honor,” and he has proven to have earned this moniker with his evil acts of aggression and mind games since turning on El Generico at “Final Battle 2011.” UltraMantis Black is known as “The Great and Devious” one and has earned that nickname with his mind games and his ability to get other wrestlers to follow him as their leader. This match would be a wild brawl with each wrestler trying to one-up the other with evil tactics. It would be a fun match to watch because of the fact that they both rely on mind games and underhanded tactics in their matches, which would make for a dynamic that is not often found in matches. Steen and Black are also two of the biggest fan favorites on either company’s roster, so it would be great to see a match between the two based on their popularity. The match would most likely be won by the wrestler who is willing to go to a darker place, but it’s impossible to say who that wrestler would be.
Those are the top five Ring of Honor vs CHIKARA matches I would like to see. There are other matches featuring wrestlers on the two company’s rosters that I would love to see, and I hope the relationship between Ring of Honor and CHIKARA lasts well beyond “Synergy.”
