Just a day after ROH presents ‘Unity’ in Chicago Ridge, they make their return to Dayton, OH and one of the company’s oldest and trustiest markets. The fallout from ‘Unity’ will begin on Sunday and with a number of big matches in store, it’s looking like it could be a fantastic event, let’s take a closer look at each match:
ROH World Title Match
Davey Richards (c) vs. Adam Cole
Adam Cole has come a long way in his short wrestling career. And on Sunday, he has the chance to earn the right to call himself the best in the world. Indeed, Cole has more than earned his opportunity at the World title but it wasn’t for Davey, there would be no title match. Cole pinned Richards at the ’10th Anninversary Show’ to win that night’s main event where he teamed with Eddie Edwards against Richards and Kyle O’Reilly. Cole proved that he could more than hang with the best in ROH and was rewarded with a Proving Ground match in Dayton.
However, champion Richards clearly felt that Cole had already proved himself by pinning him in New York and said he would give Cole his opportunity. The champion was true to his word and after talking with ROH Officials, the match was changed to a World title defence. Richards will surely have one eye on his match with Kevin Steen in Toronto and with Cole having a whole lot of momentum, could we see one of the biggest surprises in Ring of Honor history? Even if we don’t, I’m sure we’ll be in store for a potential match of the year.
ROH World Tag Team Title Match
The Briscoes (c) vs. Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team
This feud seems to keep on rolling and rolling and the fact is that these two teams just flat out hate each other. This all started at ‘Best In The World 2011’ when the Briscoes attacked WGTT with steel chairs after Haas & Benjamin had defended their titles. That led to a title match at ‘Final Battle 2011’ with the Briscoes coming out on top after a brutal affair. That wasn’t the end of it, though, with WGTT getting their rematch at ‘Showdown in the Sun: Day Two’ after attacking the seven-time champions with chairs on ROH TV.
They lost in Florida but tensions continued and they will get another opportunity in Dayton. This match has been billed as a ‘grudge match’ which it most certainly is and this may be WGTT’s last chance to capture the titles for a while. This will only be a title match if the Briscoes beat Jigsaw & Hallowicked the previous night in Chicago Ridge but with that being almost a certainty, it’s safe to say that the Dayton fans will see the belts on the line.
Two out of Three falls
Roderick Strong vs. Jay Lethal
In another rematch from ‘Showdown in the Sun’, new ROH World TV champion Roderick Strong will take on the man he defeated for the belt, Jay Lethal. The second triple crown champion in ROH history, Strong won the title after Tommaso Ciampa and The Embassy goaded Lethal into putting the belt on the line in ‘Blind Destiny’. Lethal still has an eye on Ciampa, knowing he is likely to strike at any given time, but has chance to gain retribution, but not his TV title, in Dayton.
These two have faced off on numerous occasions in the past six months or so which is why ROH Officials decided to make this a two out of three falls match! While the title may not be on the line (the TV title will only be defended on TV tapings and live iPPV), this match will once and for all decide who the better man is.
El Generico vs. Kyle O’Reilly
‘The Generic Luchador’ has found it tough going in ROH as of late; the return of Kevin Steen and the recurrence of Jimmy Jacobs’ evil ways have spelt defeat and pain for him. After losing to both men during the ‘Showdown in the Sun’ weekend, he will be looking to get back on the winning trail, and maybe close to a rematch against ‘The Zombie Princess’ with a victory over Kyle O’Reilly.
That’s easier said than done though, with O’Reilly himself wanting to gain victory to continue his impressive recent form. These two have never been in the ring together but O’Reilly will be hoping to gain some insider knowledge from Davey Richards, who has faced Generico on numerous occasions. This will be an interesting contest between two highly-skilled wrestlers – a definitely sleeper match that could steal the show.
Kevin Steen vs. BJ Whitmer
Both men will be lucky to walk into this match without some sort of injury. The previous night at ‘Unity’, Steen and Jimmy Jacobs will take on Whitmer and El Generico. Both teams hate one another and it will be a miracle if blood isn’t shed. However, in Dayton, Steen will take on the man who was a former multiple time Tag Team champion with Jimmy Jacobs, BJ Whitmer!
Whitmer returned to ROH at ‘Rise and Prove’ in Cincinnati in a losing effort against Jay Lethal .One thing he did prove, though, was that he was in the best shape of his life which is why ROH Officials were quick to bring him back for further dates. This will surely be yet another crazy war with nobody being able to predict the lengths these two men will go to win.
Mike Mondo vs. TJ Perkins
Both of these men will be desperate to win this one. Mondo is still trying to make an impression and earn more important matches in ROH. He did his case no harm by beating Matt Taven on ROH TV in an incredibly physical contest. He has impressed recently but will find it tough going against ‘Technical Lightning’ TJ Perkins.
TJP always puts on a good show but has yet to find a winning formula that has been holding him back from challenging for titles. With all the talent in the World, it’s surely just a matter of time before he puts all of the pieces together and starts to climb up the ladder in ROH. With both men eager to win this one, it should turn out to be a very interesting contest.
The All Night Express vs. Chris Silvio & Mohammad Ali Vaez
ANX are back and looking great again after Rhett Titus returned following his knee surgery. Since then, they have picked up wins over Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team and nemesis the Young Bucks as they look to get themselves into the Tag Team title picture. Indeed, they still hold a guaranteed title shot for winning ‘Ladder War III’ and it’s surely only a matter of time until they get their chance.
Until then, they will take on the up-and-coming team of Chris Silvio and Mohammad Ali Vaez. Silvio has featured on ROH TV before and both men are regulars in OVW. They will be looking to put on a good show to impress ROH Officials and warrant further matches down the line. However, with ANX on a roll, and completely focused on winning the Tag Team titles, it could be a tough night for Silva and Vaez.
So there you have it, this Sunday, the 29th April, ROH return to Dayton! The show begins at 5pm EDT at the Hara Arena with tickets being available to buy on the door. If you live in the local area, you’d be crazy to miss out on what looks to be a fantastic night of the best pro wrestling on the planet!
