Ring of Honor introduced their novel “Proving Ground” concept, recently, in Louisville, KY, for a match between World Tag Team Champions Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin and newcomers Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander.
The rules of the contest, set to be broadcast on the Sinclair network, on the weekend of November 5th, stipulated that, should the challengers survive the champions – holding them to a draw or even defeating them – they would receive a guaranteed title shot, within 60 days.
Due to the success of the initial Proving Ground match, ROH management have now decided to expand upon the concept, bringing it into usage for non-title matches, involving all of the company’s champions.
The first singles bout to take place under Proving Ground rules, will occur on the 30th October in Warner-Robins, GA, on a Rampage Pro Wrestling card. Vancouvan Kyle O’Reilly will aim to prove his worth against his mentor, Davey Richards – the current ROH World Champion.
ROH’s policy of affording opportunities to young talent will continue, on November 5th, when ROH returns to OVW’s Davis Arena for another set of TV tapings.
In the first singles Proving Ground match to be held in a ROH ring, bluechip prospect Michael Elgin will meet World Champion Richards.
Elgin’s spiritual guru, Truth Martini, has been vocal, for many months, about studying Davey. Indeed, he has led Roderick Strong to victory over the American Wolf, in the past.
Elgin, dubbed a future World Champion, by “Voice of ROH” Kevin Kelly, will be looking to produce fireworks, in the biggest opportunity of his career to date.
