We begin the show with highlights from last week’s main event where WGTT beat The Kings of Wrestling to retain their ROH World Tag Team titles.
First off in the ring is ROH Executive Producer Jim Cornette who introduces WGTT who come to the ring. Shelton Benjamin says they want a match with the Briscoes after Mark & Jay attacked them at ‘Best In The World 2011’ with steel chairs. Charlie Haas says they’ll put the titles on the line right now but Cornette won’t have any of it.
After the break, we go to a segment called ‘Focus On’ where we will take a look at ‘The Prodigy’ Mike Bennett. Jim Cornette talks about Bennett and says he has it all then Bennett himself says he will end up in Hollywood one day and he’s better than the Rock. Bennett talks about his tough training regime with his trainer ‘Brutal’ Bob Evans.
Jimmy Jacobs w/Steve Corino vs. Mike Bennett w/Brutal Bob Evans
They’re really hyping Bennett here as he takes on Jimmy Jacobs. Jacobs sends Bennett to the outside but misses a dive. Bennett takes control but Jabos fights back with a couple of clotheslines and a neckbreaker. Jacobs then hits a nice standing suplex before he walks into a spinebuster from Bennett. Jacobs off the middle rope and hits a springboard Ace Crusher but gets two. Bennett gets his knees up to block an attempted senton and then hits the ‘Box Office Smash’ which is the side slam he has used for a while.
Winner by pinfall: Mike Bennett
ROHWorld.com’s thoughts: This was a match designed to put Bennett over to the new viewers. It definitely did its job of doing that as he looked pretty dominant. Saying that, Jacobs didn’t look bad and this wasn’t a squash by any means. Pretty basic TV style match to put Bennett over. It looks as if he’s going to be receiving a pretty big push.
We now go to another segment, this one called ‘Inside ROH’. We had it last week and this week’s is all about Eddie Edwards and next week’s ROH World Title match.
Eddie talks about why he is called ‘Die Hard’ and tells us about the elbow injury he received in 2009. The next next he competed in Ladder War II while injured. He was told he would be out for six months at the very least, nine weeks later he was back in the ring.
Now we go to interviews with Davey Richards and Roderick Strong. Davey tells us that he just doesn’t like Roddy and then Roddy says that they are completely different people and Davey just can’t beat him.
ROH World TV Championship
El Generico (c) vs. Jay Lethal
We’re told that there will be a 15-minute time limit, like every TV title defence. Some nice chain wrestling to begin with and each men get a head scissors in to start the match. Hip toss followed by a quick dropkick for Lethal gets him two. Lethal dominates Generico for a few minutes and hits another good looking dropkick. Generico fights back with three arm drags and then hits a big five to the outside. Back from a commercial break and we see how Lethal got hit with a springboard moonsault on the outside.
Lethal fights back and hits the handspring elbow off the ropes. Neckbreaker from Lethal gets him two with two minutes left. Generico almost gets three with a spinning sit-out powerbomb but then the bell goes as the time limit expires. There are chants of ‘five more minutes’, Jim Cornette comes out and says they haven’t got that long but the match can continue until there’s a winner.
Both men slug it out in the middle of the ring as the crowd go absolutely crazy. Generico hits a big Yakuza kick followed by a Dragon Suplex but Lethal kicks out! Lethal reverses an attempted brainbuster with a suplex but misses an attempted elbow drop. Generico goes for a top rope brainbuster but is thrown off by Lethal who hits the big elbow drop for two! Generico hits an overhead suplex into the corner but walks into a superkick and then the Lethal Injection! WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION!
Winner by pinfall and NEW ROH WORLD TV CHAMPION: Jay Lethal
ROHWorld.com’s thoughts: Wow, what a match! This would not have looked out of place on an iPPV and really showed that ROH are not willing to sacrifice quality in matches just for TV. It really got over Generico’s fighting spirit and although I’m disappointed he lost the belt so soon after winning it, he looked good. Lethal was great too and these guys have great chemistry together. The crowd went wild, especially for the extra time and you just didn’t know who was going to win, great stuff!
We see a graphic for next week’s main event which is Davey Richards vs. Roderick Strong for the ROH World Championship as Lethal celebrates to end the broadcast.
