ROH on SBG: 10/20/12 Results

The show opens with a recap of last week’s Survival of the Fittest match between Davey Richards and Mike Bennett, which saw Richards win to advance to the tournament finals.

Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness welcome us to the show as we will get the final three Survival of the Fittest qualifiers.

Survival of the Fittest Qualifier
Roderick Strong w/ Truth Martini vs Homicide

The two have a feeling out process early in the match. Homicide scores with a headscissors and Strong escapes to the outside. Homicide and Strong brawl around the ringside area. Strong connects with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker to gain control of the match as the show goes to commercial.

Back from the break and Homicide is trying for the Three Amigos, but his back gives out. Strong locks in a bear hug, and Homicide fights out and gets a quick overhead belly-to-belly suplex. A neckbreaker gets a two count for Homicide. Homicide places Strong on the top rope. They jockey for position, and Homicide is eventually able to hit a hurricarana. Strong counters out of a Gringo Killer attempt and connects with the gutbuster and Sick Kick, but Homicide kicks out! Strong immediately follows up with the Gibson Driver to pick up the victory to advance to the finals of Survival of the Fittest.

Winner by Pinfall: Roderick Strong

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This was a good opening contest. It wasn’t the best match so far in the tournament, but it was still a nice start to the show. They had a good series of nearfalls in the closing moments and it made for an exciting closing moments. This match was better than their title match from the “9th Anniversary Show.” I was looking forward to this match, and it didn’t disappoint.

Survival of the Fittest Qualifier
Kyle O’Reilly vs Mike Mondo

We see a clip of O’Reilly picking up a victory over Adam Cole at “Caged Hostility.” Davey Richards is sitting at ringside. O’Reilly and Mondo wrestle to a standoff. O’Reilly throws Mondo off the apron into the barricade. O’Reilly dives off the apron and connects with a missile dropkick as the show goes to break.

Back from commercial and O’Reilly is still in control. O’Reilly is just punishing Mondo with kicks. Mondo stops O’Reilly when O’Reilly tries to go to the top and Mondo connects with a superplex. Mondo hits some kind of DDT variation for a two count. O’Reilly hits a reverse hurricarana and a backdrop driver, but Mondo finds a way to get his shoulder up. Mondo fights out of an armbar attempts and locks in a terrible looking submission, which causes O’Reilly to tap to the surprise of everyone, including Kevin Kelly.

Winner by Submission: Mike Mondo

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This match just didn’t do it for me. It’s not a bad match by any means, but something about it just didn’t click for me. It was like they were trying to go for an epic match but it just didn’t work. I’m sure others will like this match more than I did, but it was just kind of there for me. And that submission at the end looked terrible. It looked kind of like Colt Cabana’s Billy Goat’s Curse, except Mondo had O’Reilly legs crossed. It was like Mondo tried for a sharpshooter but was facing the wrong way.

It’s now time for Inside ROH. We get a recap of last week’s segment where RD Evans introduced QT Marshall as his new client and the beat down on Ciampa that ensued. We then see a recap of Jay Lethal beating Marhsall. Evans says he has a restraining order filed against Prince Nana. Adam Cole says he will prove himself to be a better wrestler than Kyle O’Reilly. He says he will do all he can to walk out of Pittsburgh still as ROH World TV Champion.

Survival of the Fittest Qualifier
Michael Elgin w/ Truth Martini vs Rhino w/ Truth Martini

If only Martini could clone himself, the world would be a better place. Martini says he objects and they don’t have to do this. He asks the fans if they want to see Elgin and Rhino fight, and the crowd, of course, chants “Yes!” Martini tells Rhino to step down from the match. Rhino says he steps down to no man. Martini tells Elgin to step down.Elgin says there’s no way he’s stepping down.

Elgin and Rhino immediately start trading shots as the bell rings. Elgin connects with a slingshot elbow and Rhino escapes to the floor. Elgin follows him and they fight around ringside. Roderick Strong makes his way to ringside. Rhino sets up for the Gore, but Elgin sends him into the turnbuckles. A spinebuster puts Rhino in control of the match. Elgin fights back with an enziguri and both men are down. Elgin hits a bridging German suplex but Rhino is able to kick out at two. Rhino fights out of a powerbomb attempt. Rhino connects with a TKO for a two count. Strong jumps on the apron and distracts the referees Rhino is setting up for the Gore. Martini gets in the ring and begs Rhino not to do it, and Rhino sets Martini on the top turnbuckle. That allows Elgin to hit a Gore of his own. Elgin follows it up with a powerbomb to pick up the pinfall and advance to the finals of Survival of the Fittest.

Winner by Pinfall: Michael Elgin

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This was a very good match and a great way to end the qualifying round of Survival of the Fittest and this week’s tv show. I always like watching two big wrestlers try to outpower each other, and that’s exactly what happened here. Add Martini’s antics to what is already a good match and you get something that is a lot of fun to watch. I really liked this match.
