We kick off the broadcast with a look back at last week’s TV Title match between Jay Lethal and Mike Bennett that went to a 15-minute time-limit draw.
Before the opening contest, we hear from both Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong. Strong says he’s going to embarrass Kyle and ‘Team Richards’. Kyle says Roddy wants to be the best but isn’t willing to work for it – he also admits he knows the only reason Strong is wrestling him is because he’s friends with Davey Richards.
Roderick Strong w/Truth Martini vs. Kyle O’Reilly
Truth demands Bobby Cruise read out his own introduction before the match begins. Martini joins Nigel McGuinness and Kevin Kelly on commentary and really puts over the Roderick Strong challenge for ‘Final Battle 2011’. Some really nice mat wrestling to begin with before O’Reilly hits a nice looking dropkick and some hard strikes on Strong. Back from the break and Strong hits a sick looking kick to the back of O’Reilly’s head for two.
Nice overhead suplex by O’Reilly before both men trade blows. Missile dropkick gets O’Reilly two before the butterfly suplex combination gets him another close fall. A barrage of forearms gives Strong the chance to hit a sit-out powerbomb but O’Reilly kicks out. Big kick to the face by Strong and then the double knee gutbuster but O’Reilly kicks out again! Roddy locks in the Strong Hold but O’Reilly gets to the ropes.
Tornado DDT by O’Reilly who then hangs on and locks in a guillotine choke, Strong pushes him down to the mat and when both men get up, he hits a jumping knee followed by a nasty Sick Kick that gets him the victory. After the match, Michael Elgin hits the ring as the House of Truth beat down on O’Reilly. Tony Kozina tries to stop the assault but can’t and then even World Champion Davey Richards can’t help but get a beat down. Finally, Eddie Edwards hits the ring and makes the save.
Winner by pinfall: Roderick Strong
ROHWorld.com’s thoughts: Brilliant match between these two. It really put both guys over – O’Reilly looked like a warrior despite picking up the loss and Strong continued his impressive start to ROH’s new TV era. Some really great action in this one and was very easy to watch, would like to see a longer match between these two on iPPV.
After the break, Jim Cornette comes out to the ringside area where one of the crew has been injured by Michael Elgin. Cornette says all members of the House of Truth have been fined $2,500 for starting the melee. A few guys from the crowd then start chanting ‘We want Steen!’. Cornette says he understands Steen is a great wrestler but he has to deal with him and he’s a nightmare – he says Ring of Honor won’t do business ever again with Kevin Steen.
We go into this week’s ‘Inside ROH’, the first thing Kevin Kelly talks about is the ROH World Title match at ‘Final Battle 2011’. he says the two men in the running to face off against Davey are Jay Lethal and Eddie Edwards. Both Jay and Eddie cut promos about how big Final Battle is and how much it would mean to them to be in the main event.
After that we take a look at the rules for the ‘Proving Ground’ contests which begin next week. We go to promos from both WGTT and Cedric Alexander & Caprice Coleman.
Tommaso Ciampa w/The Embassy vs. Alex Silva
Steve Corino is on commentary for this match, Silva is apparently training with OVW. Ciampa refuses a handshake before hitting a dropkick and the action then spills to the outside where Silva is driven into the barricades. Silva goes for a roll up but Ciampa rolls through and he hits a dropkick to Silva’s knee from a seated position – pretty cool.
Silva begins to fight back but Ciampa hits a big neckbreaker to halt the comeback before four running knees in the corner. Ciampa grabs Silva out of the corner and then hits the ‘Project Ciampa’ for the victory.
Winner by pinfall: Tommaso Ciampa
ROHWorld.com’s thoughts: Ciampa is really being built up as the ‘Dominant Male’ and he’s living up to that with some impressive victories. I still think he has the coolest finisher move in wrestling today. Made Ciampa look great and I think this man could go far in ROH.
The Briscoes vs. The All Night Express
The winners of this match will get a Tag Team title shot at ‘Final Battle 2011’ and Bobby Cruise can’t even get through the introductions before both teams are attacking each other. ANX take control early on with a wide variety of double team moves. Back from the break and the Briscoes have taken charge thanks to a big boot from Jay Briscoe.
The six-time champions continue on top with a powerbomb/cutter combo but King manages to get the hot tag to Rhett Titus. Two dropkicks from Titus floor Jay but he only gets a two. Jay hits a one armed spinebuster of King, he then tries to cut off Titus on the top but gets given the snake eyes by Titus.
Mark back in the ring, he sets Rhett up on the top and then hits a springboard cutter before King hits a springboard blockbuster as he walks into a big DDT by Jay Bricoe – crazy stuff! King gets thrown off the top, Jay helps Mark reverse Titus into a hurricanrana as both Briscoes hold Titus down for the three.
Winners by pinfall: The Briscoes
ROHWorld.com’s thoughts: It was always going to be hard for these two teams to put on a match that had people drawn in as they’ve faced each other so many times this year. Even so, I thought this was a really good match, there were some nice spots and each team had a chance to get themselves and their moves over. Not sure I agree with giving the Briscoes a shot after Ladder War 3 but very good nonetheless.
We see a graphic for next week’s Proving Ground match as the broadcast finishes.
