ROH on SBG: 2/16/13 Report

Kevin Kelly welcomes us to the show and hypes up tonight’s main event between Jay Lethal and Jimmy Jacobs. Truth Martini is on commentary with Kelly and Caleb Seltzer.

Before our first contest, we got to Tadarius Thomas who is being interviewed by Veda Scott in the back. He’s cut off by QT Marshall who says he’s here to tell everybody RD Evans is overseas dealing with very important business. Thomas says he does his talking in the ring before walking off.

Top Prospect Tournament Semi-Final
QT Marshall vs. Tadarius Thomas

Thomas uses his speed early on to get the better of Marshall and hits a nice kick before backdropping him to the arena floor. Thomas goes to the outside but Marshall cuts him off and drives him spine first into the steel ring post. Thomas fights back when the action returns to the ring with another nice kick before blocking a Marshall punch with his own head. Marshall comes back with a tilt-a-whirlwind backbreaker followed by a powerslam for two. Thomas blocks an attempted Alabama slam before hitting a Dragon suplex for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Tadarius Thomas

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: I’ll admit that I’m not a big fan of either of these men. I feel Thomas’ offense is too delibrate and it ruins the flow of matches. He is still pretty fun to watch, though. I think this is the beginning of the end for Marshall in ROH, he just hasn’t delievered since getting a contract at Boiling Point. A pretty average match to start the show.

We then go to footage of Charlie Haas and BJ Whitmer brawling at a local car dealership. Haas was supposed to turn up for an appearance but didn’t make it so was replaced by Whitmer. Haas finally turns up and the pair then start brawling in the parking lot. Haas sends Whitmer into a car window and then slams him several times with the car’s door. He then hits an Olympic Slam onto the hood of another car before storming off.

Nick Westgate & Brian Fury vs. Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander

C&C dominate the early goings in this match with some nice double team moves before Caprice takes out both Westgate & Fury on the outside with a springboard crossbody. Out of nowhere, Rhino hits the ring and gores Cedric! Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs then come to the ring, Corino gets a mic and says he’s warning everybody that evil is coming on March 2 at the ’11th Anniversary Show’. He says Ring of Honor dies and everybody will live for the Ring of Scum.

No Contest

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: More of an angle than a match but it was nicely done and I like how SCUM are being built up strongly in the build-up to the ’11th Anniversary Show’.

Backstage to a brief promo from Silas Young. He says he’s the last real man in professional wrestling and when he puts Matt Taven in the Stock Lock, he’ll either have to tap out or he’ll break him. Taven responds and says he’s on a path to the Top Prospect final and Young is in his way.

Top Prospect Tournament Semi-Final
Silas Young vs. Matt Taven

Some nice technical wrestling from both men to start this match. Neither man can gain full control of the match until Young takes advantage of referee Paul Turner talking to Taven to take his opponent down. Taven does fight back though and hits a bicycle kick to knock Young to the outside. Taven goes for a diving move off the apron but Young reverses it into a powerslam in mid-air! Taven kicks out at two back in the ring before he comes back with an enziguri to Young on the apron. Taven climbs the ropes and hits a moonsault to the outside. He goes for the Air Taven (frog splash) back in the ring but Young evades it. Young hits a backbreaker and then goes for a clothesline but Taven reverses it and rolls Young up for the three count.

Winner by Pinfall: Matt Taven

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: This was much better than the first semj-final and I really hope both of these men have a future in ROH. They managed to fit a lot into the brief time they had and it made for a fun, action-packed match that made both guys look good which is the whole aim of this tournament.

Now on to this week’s ‘Inside ROH’ with Kevin Kelly. We see brief highlights of Matt Hardy’s match with at BJ Whitmer at ‘Defy or Deny 2′ in Milwaukee. With BJ still feeling the effects of his injured neck, Rhett Titus threw in the towel to stop the match. Hardy says he won’t stop until he gets a title match. Adam Cole comes down to the ring and Hardy attempts to low blow him again before Cole attacks him. Security keep them apart before Hardy gets the title belt and hits Cole with it before walking off. We hear some words from Cole later in the evening and he says he’s pissed off. He says Hardy is living in the past and that nobody cares about him any more.

We then see how Charlie Haas confronted Nigel McGuinness and told him that Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team deserve a title shot. Nigel says they will get a shot on TV in two weeks’ time. If they lose, WGTT will not be able to tag in ROH ever again. The Briscoes say they’re the best tag team in the world and they’ll have a job for WGTT when they make them split next week – working on their chicken farm!

Jay Lethal vs. Jimmy Jacobs

Steve Corino joins the commentary table for this one. The action quickly spills to the outside with Lethal thrown into the barricades before both men return to the ring. Lethal hits a nice dropkick before Jacobs comes back with a head scissors that sends Lethal into the barricades. Jacobs sets Lethal on a chair and goes for a diving move but Lethal moves and Jacobs ends up flying into the chair.

Back from a commercial break and Lethal is getting on top with a nice combination of moves that ends with a reverse DDT. Lethal Combination gets Lethal a two count before he hits a Superkick. Lethal goes for the springboard elbow but Jacobs reverses it into a backcracker. He follows it up with the Sliced Bread #2 but Lethal manages to kick out. Jacobs goes for a hurricanrana on Lethal who was on the top rope but is denied. Lethal comes back with a Death Valley Driver and then hits the Hail To The King for the victory.

Winner by Pinfall: Jay Lethal

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: As I expected, this was a really fun match. I’m glad they are giving Jacobs more singles matches as I think he still has a lot to give in that aspect. I liked this match but I feel it could have been a bit longer. It continued the whole SCUM storyline and we saw another side of Steen after the match which makes the World Title match at the ’11th Anniversary Show’ very intriguing. Good match to end the show.

Following the match, Rhino comes to the ring but before he can do anything, Caprice Coleman hits the ring. He is blind-sided by Corino though and gets gored. Rhino again lines up the gore on Lethal but Kevin Steen comes to the ring and stops it from happening. Steen then offers to help Lethal up before Lethal gets out of the ring and looks on confused as the show ends.
