ROH on SBG: 7/27/13 Report

Kevin Kelly welcomes us to the show and hypes Steel Cage Warfare.

#Party Boys (Mike Sydal and Zizou Middou) vs The American Wolves (Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards)

Richards and Middoux start the match off and Middoux is sent to the floor. Richards misses the apron kick and Sydal hits a top rope moonsault to the floor. Richards backs Sydal into the corner and tags in Edwards. Sydal hits a nice DDT to tag in Middoux, who unloads a series of punches on Richards in the corner. The Party Boys hit a combination of double neckbreakers on the Wolves. Double knees get a two count for the Party Boys. Edwards catches Sydal’s kick and throws him down into a split. Alarm clock to Middoux. Edwards and Richards hit a double stomp combination, which allows Richards to pick up the three count.

Winners by Pinfall: The American Wolves

The Party Boys refuse the Code of Honor.

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: I didn’t like the #PartyBoys at “Reclamation: Night One” at all, but it was an entirely different story here. They looked like a pretty good young team who have a lot of potential. Of course, it didn’t hurt being in the ring with the Wolves, who can make anyone look like a million bucks. But I liked what I saw out of the Party Boys, other than the stupid name. I wouldn’t mind seeing them get another opportunity.

We get a recap of the S.C.U.M. angle since the “11th Anniversary Show.”

Steel Cage Warfare
ROH vs S.C.U.M.

Jimmy Jacobs and BJ Whitmer start the match off. They instantly start trading blows as the bell rings. Jacobs sends Whitmer face-first into the cage. Whitmer side steps a spear attempt and launches Jacobs into the cage. Whitmer continues to batter Jacobs as the next entrant is announced. Rhett Titus is competitor number three, but isn’t have any more success than Jacobs as the show goes to commercial.

Back from the break and the numbers game has caught up to Whitmer, but luckily Michael Elgin makes his entrance. Elgin hits a double side suplex on Whitmer and Jacobs and continues to use his strength advantage to control the match.

Cliff Compton is the third entrant for S.C.U.M. and throws powder in Elgin’s eyes. Jacobs and Compton zip tie Elgin to the cage and then triple team Whitmer. Titus hits a spiked piledriver to make Whitmer the first wrestler eliminated.

The next wrestler to enter is Jay Lethal, who comes to the ring with a chair. He hits Titus with it and then dropkicks Compton. He hits the Lethal Combination on Jacobs using an open chair. Lethal frees Elgin as the show goes to break.

S.C.U.M. still has the numbers advantage as the show returns from break, and Rhino enters the match with a Gore to Elgin. He tries to Gore Lethal, but he avoids it and sends him into Titus. Lethal hits the Lethal Injection to eliminate Rhino! S.C.U.M. holds a 3-2 advantage.

Kevin Steen is the final entrant to even the numbers, but Matt Hardy runs in from behind and attacks him before he can get in the cage. The action from inside cage spills to the ringside area. Jacobs sets up a table in the ring as the other wrestlers continue to brawl on the floor. Lethal avoids being sent through the table and a Lethal Injection eliminates Titus.

ROH now holds a 3-2 advantage in the match, but Hardy is still ringside. Lethal spears Lethal through the table, which allows Compton to get the pin. It’s now two on two as the show goes to break.

Back from commercial and it’s still Steen and Elgin vs Jacobs and Compton. Jacobs went for the headscissors takedown, but Elgin slings him into the cage. Compton tries climbing to the top of the cage, but Elgin cuts him off with a super Elgin Bomb for the pin to eliminate Compton.

Steve Corino gets in the ring and throws a fireball in Elgin’s face. This allows Jacobs to get the pin. It’s now Steen vs Jacobs. Steen goes to Package Piledriver Corino, but Hardy stops him with a Twist of Fate. Corino opens a briefcase with lighter fluid and matches and he pours the lighter fluid all over Steen. Jacobs tries stopping him, but Corino pushes him off. Nigel McGuinness runs to the ring and he and takes out Corino with a lariat! He turns around into a Twist of Fate attempt, but Steen stops it and hits the Package Piledriver on Hardy. Steen hits another on Jacobs to pick up the pin and disband S.C.U.M!

Winners: Team ROH

Adam Cole comes to ringside and Steen and McGuinness shake hands.

ROHWorld.com’s Thoughts: Say what you will about the S.C.U.M. angle and the timing of this match. Sure, the angle was ultimately disappointing after a hot start at the “11th Anniversary Show,” but this felt like a huge blowoff match. There were so many small intertwining stories throughout the match that made it enjoyable from start to finsih. The ending was insane with the fireball, which gives Elgin a reason to continue after Corino if he sticks around. Steen getting the win was a perfect conclusion to his redemption story and made everything come full circle. Jacobs was great as he was in the match for the entire 30 minutes it ran. It probably wasn’t as intense as other Steel Cage Warfare matches in terms of violence, but it was a great tv match and a fitting way to end this story. S.C.U.M. is dead, and it ended on its highest note.
