ROH TV EP479

UMBC Event Centre – Baltimore, MD – Friday, November 20, 2020

Quinn McKay welcomes us and hypes the card – Jay Lethal v LSG in a Pure Rules Match, Bateman v Matt Taven in the main event, and the opening match of EC3 v Jay Briscoe. That segues into a video package for the match.

Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman are on commentary.

~MATCH #1~
EC3 defeats Jay Briscoe by disqualification at 1:57. This is EC3’s first singles match and first time in the ring with Jay Briscoe. They start slowly, and EC3 offers an early handshake. That just pisses Jay off, and they start scrapping. EC3 offers another handshake, so Jay beats him down in the corner, and chokes him with his boot. Referee Todd Sinclair gives Jay the count of five, and Jay doesn’t break so Sinclair disqualifies him. Well, that sucked, but I assume it’s going to lead to something more so I’m on board.
Rating: ½*

They continue to brawl after the bell until the masked security crew run out to break them up. EC3 keeps telling Jay to “control [his] narrative,” and then he gives himself up, but security stops Jay from doing anything.

When Jay gets backstage, McKay stops him and asks why he got himself disqualified. Jay gives the most Vince McMahon answer possible, and that makes me smile.

With a Pure Rules Match coming up, we get the extended video package treatment for Leon St. Giovanni, better known as LSG. For years, LSG was in a tag team with Shaheem Ali known as Coast 2 Coast, and they had a pretty solid run but it seems like LSG is on his own now. Lethal gets his promo time as well, revealing that he requested this match with LSG because he’s earned it. Really well done video here.

~MATCH #2~
Jay Lethal defeats LSG via judge’s decision at 15:00 in a Pure Rules Match. They chain wrestle early on and LSG keeps pace with the ROH legend. Things speed up and Lethal puts LSG in position for a Figure-Four Leglock, and LSG uses his first rope break at about three minutes in. Even after regrouping on the floor, LSG is unable to take control, as Lethal maintains the upper hand for several minutes. When Lethal heads up top, LSG slams him down to the floor and hits a baseball slide dropkick. LSG is in control as we take a commercial break. When we come back LSG is still on offense. Lethal eventually makes a comeback and hits a flurry of offense, including a suicide dive. As we move into crunch time, both men start firing big shots. Lethal tries the Lethal Injection but LSG impressively counters it. LSG tries a couple different submission holds, including a modified Muta Lock that causes Lethal to use his first rope break just as time runs out. We’re going to the judges, and they award the bout to Lethal by a vote of 2-1. LSG is disappointed, especially given he had Lethal in a hold as the time was running out. I really liked this match and the finish, since it worked on a couple of levels – it smartly uses the Pure Rules, it gives both men reasons to want a rematch (LSG to prove he can win, Lethal to prove he’s still the better wrestler). Plus, the up-and-comer v veteran is a sound dynamic and these guys hit it early on and rode it out to the end.
Rating: ***½

~MATCH #3~
Matt Taven defeats Bateman at 9:33. They start off brawling right away, since Bateman helped Vincent injure Taven back in the spring. This goes on for a while. We take a quick commercial break and come back to Taven locking on the Trendsetter (crossface), but Bateman reaches the ropes. Taven hits a suicide dive to the floor, and then brings Bateman back in for Aurora Borealis (frog splash) but it misses. Bateman goes for a go-behind but Taven counters to a victory roll to get the pin. Solid match that actually felt a bit gutted by the commercial break.
Rating: **½

Bateman attacks Taven after the bell, and Vincent makes his way out to berate Taven and help Bateman keep him down. Things are about to get extreme, but some generic rock music hits and the lights go out. When they come back on, Mike Bennett is here! Bennett is wearing a truly ridiculous suit here, but even so, he clears the ring and shares a hug with his former ROH Tag Team Championship partner. I would’ve liked this a lot more had there been no music, tron video, or the lights going out, to be honest. It just feels like in 2020 it’s too much of a leap to ask viewers to make that this big surprise return is happening when there’s music, a video, and he can coordinate the lights going out at the right time. Negativity aside, Bennett being back is good for ROH, and this leads to a logical tag team match, I’m assuming at Final Battle.

JZ Says
This was a well-paced hour, with some storytelling bookending the show and a damn fine match in between. Hopefully next week we can get some information on Final Battle, especially since they’ve announced that all the titles will be on the line, so we need to line up some challengers.
