ROH TV EP480

UMBC Event Centre – Baltimore, MD – Friday, November 27, 2020

We open with The Foundation, made up of ROH Pure Champion Jonathan Gresham, along with his ROH Tag Team Championship partner Jay Lethal, “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams, and Rhett Titus. Gresham is really taking the lead in this faction, and I like that. They want to rebuild Ring of Honor and restore Honor to the promotion.

We cut over to Quinn McKay, who hypes both big matches tonight – Brody King v Shane Taylor in a Number One Contender’s Match, and Jay Lethal facing Josh Woods in a Pure Rules match. She hypes it as a double main event, and I’ll go along with it.

This segues into a nice video/promo package featuring both Woods and Lethal. I like that Woods points out that he and Lethal are the only two men to win a Pure Rules match via judge’s decision. Lethal does a good job putting Woods over here.

Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman are on commentary.

~MATCH #1~
Josh Woods defeats Jay Lethal at 14:03 in a Pure Rules Match. They chain wrestle to start, in the spirit of the Pure Rules of course. Both men are cautious, not wanting to make that crucial first mistake. Lethal goes to the leg, and Woods focuses on the arm, causing Lethal to use his first rope break about three minutes in. Woods gets overly cocky and Lethal gets angry, turning this into more of a fight in a hurry. They continue to battle, and we go to commercial at about five minutes. When we come back, Lethal is in the driver’s seat. Lethal uses a chin lock to get Woods to use his first rope break at eight and a half minutes in. Woods continues to control a majority of the match, and he shows counters and reversals to almost everything Lethal tries. Lethal looks desperate as Woods continues getting stronger. In the end, Woods traps Lethal in an inescapable crucifix pin to get the victory. Man, ROH is really committed to pushing new guys, and the old guard (Lethal, Castle, King, etc.) have done a great job helping that along. Woods looked awesome here, countering every one of Lethal’s signature moves on his way to a dominant win.

We’re introduced to a new backstage interview show, “Trending with Taven.” Former ROH Grand Slam Champion Matt Taven hosts, and his first guest is former ROH Tag Team Championship partner, Mike Bennett, who returned to ROH last week. They show just a little bit of it and then it’s on to the next thing.

On the farm in Sandy Fork, Mark Briscoe pontificates about getting the guaranteed rematch for the ROH Tag Team Titles but laments the fact that his brother and tag team partner Jay Briscoe is more focused on EC3 at the moment. Mark says he’s going to find himself another partner.

The video package for the main event is great, and both King and Taylor come off like a big deal here. I didn’t recall that Taylor actually pinned King in a four-way match back in May of 2019 to win the ROH TV Title from Jeff Cobb. Hirooki Goto was the fourth man, FYI.

~MATCH #2~
Brody King defeats Shane Taylor at 12:37. The Soldiers of Savagery (Kaun & Moses) accompany Taylor to ringside but head to the back before the opening bell. Riccaboni announces that Mike Bennett will make his return to ROH in-ring action next week against Vincent. King and Taylor waste no time going at each other, and King scores the first knockdown. Taylor tries going to the floor, but King follows him out with a somersault dive off the apron. King abuses Taylor on the floor for a while until a commercial break. When we come back, Taylor has gained the advantage. They’re still on the floor, where Taylor abuses King with forearms before kicking him right through the barricade. King makes it back to the ring just before the referee can complete a 20-count, so the match goes on. Taylor continues his onslaught, hitting a big spinebuster for a near-fall. King comes back and hits a Spicolli Driver into the corner. We take a quick break and come back to both men unleashing big strikes on each other. King hits a piledriver for two. Taylor fights back and hits a package piledriver for his own two-count. Something’s gotta give here. King hits a release German Suplex and a lariat but only gets one! A shocked King hits a succession of three lariats to get the pin. Really good showing by both guys here, just throwing bombs at each other for almost 15 minutes until one guy couldn’t go anymore. Simple and effective.

JZ Says
ROH is just great right now, and this was another strong episode. King is nicely positioned going after RUSH at Final Battle, and we’ve got some other things going there too – Taven & Bennett against Vincent & Bateman, Mark Briscoe’s search for a tag team partner, and Jay Briscoe’s beef with EC3. I really like this ROH.
