ROH TV EP488

UMBC Event Center – Baltimore, MD – Friday, January 22, 2021

Quinn McKay welcomes us to the show, hyping the two big matches on tap for tonight. She recaps the situation surrounding the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Titles, which were offered to Shane Taylor Promotions at Final Battle 2020, but they refused, wanting to win them in a match.

Next, we take a look back at last week’s main event, which saw Dragon Lee successfully defend the ROH World Television Championship against Rey Horus. After that bout, when Lee was celebrating his win, Brody Lee interrupted him and talked some trash.

McKay then briefly recaps Flip Gordon’s win over Rhett Titus last week and they show the rankings for the Pure Title. Rankings could change after our first match tonight! Woods and Castle get the video package/promo treatment to get the audience hype.

Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman are on commentary.

~MATCH #1~
Josh Woods defeats Dalton Castle at 14:27 in a Pure Rules Match. They chain wrestle in the early going, and Woods takes first control, working on Castle’s midsection. Castle wears rib tape in every match lately, so that’s just a good choice. Woods uses an abdominal stretch and coaxes Castle into using his first rope break around seven minutes in. Castle comes back and sends Woods to the floor, and we take a commercial break. When we come back, we learn that Castle has been in control and he even forced Woods to use a rope break. Out on the floor, Castle does more damage to Woods, ramming him into the barricade and the ring post. As we get further into the match, both men turn up the aggression. Castle tries the Bang-a-Rang, but Woods counters it and put son a Cloverleaf to get a very quick tap-out. The losing streak continues for Castle. Fun match between these two, with Woods looking a step ahead almost the entire way, and Castle doing a great job making his opponent look good.

Before the main event, the Foundation gets some promo time backstage. Williams takes the lead on this one. I like when the cut promo they’re all there, but one guy does most of the talking, and it rotates. That’s a cool deal. Elsewhere, Shane Taylor & Soldiers of Savagery have a retort, and now it’s on.

~MATCH #2~
Shane Taylor Promotions (Shane Taylor, Kaun & Moses) defeat The Foundation (ROH World Tag Team Champion Jay Lethal, ROH Tag Team and Pure Champion Jonathan Gresham & Tracy Williams in a Six-Man Tag Team Match at 12:08. Kaun and Moses show off their strength early on, surprising Lethal. The Foundation regroups out on the floor, but when they go back to the match, STP continues to control the action so they go out and regroup for a second time. Finally the Foundation finds a strategy that works, going after Moses’s left arm. That goes for a few minutes, even spanning a commercial break, before Kaun gets a hot tag and he cleans house on the ROH veterans. The referee loses control, and the action reaches a fever pitch. In the end, Taylor catches Lethal with Welcome to the Land to get the pin. Great win for Taylor on his way to  a World Title showdown with RUSH. This was a really well-worked match that did a great deal for SOS’s credibility.

JZ Says
Terrific episode this week, with two stellar matches that continued the trend of established guys putting over up-and-coming talent. I hope they announce their next big show soon so that they can start to build to specific things.
