ROH TV EP489

UMBC Event Center – Baltimore, MD – Friday, January 29, 2021

Quinn McKay welcomes us to the show and hypes tonight’s matches. We see some brief clips of Joe Keys winning the gauntlet match on ROH Week by Week to earn a shot at the ROH Pure Title. This segues nicely into the video package for Keys v Gresham.

Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman are on commentary.

~MATCH #1~
ROH Pure Champion Jonathan Gresham defeats Joe Keys at 12:41 to retain the title. Gresham has been the Champion since 10.30.20, and this is his second defense. Dak Draper joins the commentary team to talk about how he’s throwing his hat into the Pure Division ring. Gresham is coming into tonight’s defense with a 6-0 record in Pure Rules matches. They wrestle on the mat to start and Keys uses his first rope break in less than 90 seconds. Gresham uses his first about a minute later. Not long after, we take a commercial break to learn about what we can do if we’ve had complications with our hernia surgery. Visit MeshJustice.com for more information. We come back to a slug-fest. Gresham wins and continues his attack on Keys’ arm and shoulder. Keys fights back and puts on a half crab, so Gresham uses his second rope break at just shy of 11 minutes. Moments later, Keys hits a diving headbutt from the second rope, and Gresham uses his third rope break to break that pin. When Keys goes up top for another diving headbutt, Gresham moves out of the way. After a solid back and forth exchange, Gresham traps Keys in a vicious hammerlock to get the tap-out win. Solid match and a good showing for Keys, but I actually think it went too long for their positions on the card – should’ve been no longer than 10 minutes. I will say, making a hammerlock into a viable finisher is fucking boss.

Backstage, Mike Bennett is getting his ankle taped, and Taven comes in so they can discuss whether Bennett is ready to go or not. Bennett assures Taven that he is.

Elsewhere, Danhausen steals the show with his terrific promo and video package. You can check it out right here Then we have to watch a promo video for Brian Johnson, which I do not enjoy. They’ll fight this Wednesday in a special YouTube exclusive match.

In yet another location, The Bouncers get some promo time, and they talk about how determined they are to become the ROH World Tag Team Champions.

Then the OGK get some more promo time, and Taven actually STARTS the promo with his catchphrase, which is just awful.

~MATCH #2~
The OGK (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) defeat The Bouncers (Beer City Bruiser & Brawler Milonas) at 11:56. Bennett is visibly favoring his left ankle on the way to the ring. After some back and forth stuff, the Bouncers take control and work on Bennett, focusing on his injured ankle. Eventually a hot tag is made, and Taven flies all over the place. Taven hits Bruiser with Aurora Borealis, but Brawler breaks it up. The referee has basically given up trying to control any part of this match. Taven traps Bruiser in a Crossface to get the tap-out. Boring match with no point, as there was no prior issue here or stakes of any kind. I like the Bouncers, but Taven and Bennett as a duo don’t do much for me.
Rating: **¼

As the Bouncers and OGK get ready to drink some beers together, The Righteous – Vincent, Bateman, and Vita Von Starr – make their way out. Vincent cuts a really good promo, giving the Bouncers a laundry list of reasons they shouldn’t be commiserating with Taven over beer. Bruiser apparently agrees and smashes a beer bottle on Taven’s head! He takes Bennett out too. Milonas looks shocked as the show ends.

~BONUS MATCH: YouTube Exclusive, 2/3/21~
Brian Johnson defeats Danhausen at 11:39. This is a rematch from Final Battle 2020. Johnson’s “angry guy” shtick is really hard to watch. It’s just not working for me at all, dawg. They fight inside and outside the ring, and Johnson even does some mid-match promo work on the mic. Johnson controls the match for a while, and then Danhausen makes his comeback with some fun offense. Danhausen goes for the jar of teeth, but Johnson blocks it. Johnson hits a Tower of London for two, and then dumps the jar of teeth out. While the referee is distracted by sweeping up the teeth, Johnson removes the top turnbuckle pad. Danhausen turns the tables and slingshots “The Mecca” into the exposed steel, and then hits Goodnighthausen. Johnson wisely rolls to the floor, where he finds a microphone under the ring. He makes sure to turn the mic off before hitting Danhausen with it. Johnson comes back in the ring with a slingshot splash to get the pin. Too long for any Brian Johnson match, but Danhausen is a treat as always.

Not a great episode match-wise, but I really liked the ending of the show with Vincent’s promo and the Bruiser turn. I’m interested in the follow-up there. Gresham successfully defended his title while Dak Draper was on commentary – is Draper next in line for a shot at the Pure Title? Hopefully they’ll announce their next big event soon so they can officially start a build to something and get their Champions involved.
