After months of buildup, “Synergy” is finally happening this weekend. Ring of Honor and CHIKARA are working together to provide one great day of professional wrestling in Chicago Ridge, Ill. The two companies are running a double-header with CHIKARA’s “Hot Off the Griddle” in the afternoon, and Ring of Honor’s “Unity” in the evening. Wrestlers from both companies are appearing on the shows, and it should make for an unforgettable night of action.
Let’s take a closer at each match.
ROH World Tag Team Title Match
Jay and Mark Briscoe defend vs Hallowicked and Jigsaw
This is the match that started the relationship between the two companies at “Homecoming 2012” in January. Hallowicked and Jigsaw were placed in a Proving Ground match against the Briscoes. Hallowicked and Jigsaw made the CHIKARMY proud when they upset the Briscoes as some of their CHIKARA roster members watched from ringside. They are getting their shot at the ROH World Tag Team Titles April 28 at “Unity.” Hallowicked and Jigsaw are among the two best wrestlers on the CHIKARA roster, and with the confidence of already having beaten the Briscoes once it would not be shocking for them to capture the gold. The Briscoes have to try to save face and defend Ring of Honor’s reputation of being home to the best tag team scene in the world. It’s going to be a great match with lots of high-flying and hard-hitting action, and it would come as no surprise for either team to win. If I had to pick a team, though, my money would be on the Briscoes to retain and get retribution for their previous loss to Hallowicked and Jigsaw.
Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team
vs ROH World Champion Davey Richards and Kyle O’Reilly
Charlie Haas recently called out Richards and O’Reilly’s chemistry and teamwork. He said that he and Shelton Benjamin are on the same page, and have been for years. He wonders whether Richards and O’Reilly are after O’Reilly’s disrespectful actions as of late. The story of this match is whether or not Richards and O’Reilly will be able to team together and be a cohesive unit. If they are able to work together, then they would have a great chance at winning the match. If they are not able to do so, then it will be an easy night for Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team. It should be a great match between four of the very best Ring of Honor has to offer.
The All Night Express vs The House of Truth w/ Truth Martini
The All Night Express and The House of Truth have never faced each other in a tag match, but that will change when they meet for the first time ever at “Unity.” The House of Truth should be riding higher than ever after “Showdown in the Sun.” Roderick Strong was finally able to capture the ROH World TV Title from Jay Lethal, and Michael Elgin put on one of the best matches in Ring of Honor history as he came up just short when he challenged Davey Richards for the ROH World Title. Although things could not be going much better, there is some friction between the members of The House of Truth. Truth Martini is denying there are any problems, but it’s obvious from watching the group that there are problems between them. The All Night Express has been running on all cylinders since Rhett Titus returned from injury in March. Titus and Kenny King are focused on returning to the title scene, and this is just another step in that chase for them. This should be a very interesting match. It should be fun to see how King’s natural athleticism and Elgin’s brute strength are put to use in the match. This could possibly be one of the best matches on the show.
Kevin Steen and Jimmy Jacobs vs El Generico and BJ Whitmer
The history between Steen and Generico is well documented, and has been going on for years now. Another chapter of the story was written at “Showdown in the Sun” when Jacobs sided with Steen to take out Generico. Little did anyone know at the time, Jacobs was reopening an old book of his own. A match was announced for “Unity” pitting Jacobs and Steen against Generico and a partner of Generico’s choosing. Generico picked a partner that has as much history with Jacobs as Generico does with Steen when he chose BJ Whitmer. Whitmer and Jacobs were multi-time ROH World Tag Team Champions together before Jacobs’ fascination with Lacey created a rift between them. This led to a brutal and bloody war between the two that raged for a year. The war will be restarted when Whitmer once again steps into a Ring of Honor ring April 28 at “Unity.”
This should be an absolute war between two teams who hate each other. Blood will be shed and careers will be shortened in this match, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the referee let the rules slide a little during the match. A brutal match with crazy spots and action throughout is expected. It seems like this is said for every Kevin Steen match, but this is the match most Ring of Honor fans are most looking forward to at “Unity.” Steen is going to try his best to close the door on this part of his life as he prepares for his title match against Richards at “Border Wars.” Generico is trying to get revenge for everything Steen has put him through over the years. No matter who wins, it’s going to be a crazy match that will have the crowd on the edge of their seat throughout.
Ring of Honor vs CHIKARA Trios Match
Adam Cole, TJ Perkins and Jay Lethal vs The Colony (Fire Ant, Soldier Ant and Green Ant)
In addition to the ROH World Tag Team Title match, this match is another interpromotional match between Ring of Honor and CHIKARA. It’s CHIKARA’s specialty match: the trios match. CHIKARA is known for its great trios action, and annually hosts the “King of Trios” tournament that welcomes the best trios from around the world. Representing CHIKARA in this match is the 2011 King of Trios champions, The Colony. The Colony has teamed together for years, and Fire Ant and Soldier Ant are former CHIKARA Campeonatos de Parejas. They are one of the best and most dynamic trios in the world today. Ring of Honor’s trio hasn’t had the chance to mesh like The Colony has. This will be the first time Cole, Perkins and Lethal have teamed together. These are three of the most talented wrestlers in Ring of Honor, but their inexperience together may be too much to overcome.
The match will be contested under Lucha rules, which means when a wrestler exits the ring, one of his partners may enter the match without needing to be tagged. These rules make for a fast-paced match that has nonstop action. This match is going to be a lot of fun, as all six wrestlers are great at what they do. There will be a lot of high-flying and innovative moves during the match that will leave the crowd wowed. This could potentially steal the show.
The Bravados vs The Young Bucks
“Unity” will be the first time The Bravados have appeared in Ring of Honor since “Final Battle 2011.” They trained and competing in Pro Wrestling NOAH from January through March to further hone their craft and become a better tag team. They return a more seasoned team, and jump right back into the thick of competition as they battle the Young Bucks. The Bravados were unable to defeat the Bucks in the past, but maybe their tour of Japan will help change that Saturday. The Bucks better realize the Bravados aren’t the same Grandma’s Boys they were just a few short months ago. If the Young Bucks take the Bravados lightly, then the Bravadoes could have a triumphant return to Ring of Honor.
Ring of Honor presents “Unity” Saturday April 28 at the Frontier Fieldhouse in Chicago Ridge, Ill. The event is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. EDT, and there will be a meet and greet involving Davey Richards, Roderick Strong, Jay and Mark Briscoe, Maria Kanellis, Jay Lethal, The All Night Express and The Colony beginning at 6 p.m. Wrestling fans are in for a treat when Ring of Honor and CHIKARA work together for “Synergy.”
