ROHWorld Weekend Roundup (01/04/13)

ROH returns to Baltimore

Ring of Honor returns to action tomorrow night for its first set of television tapings of 2013 in Baltimore, MD.

The taping is set to feature the first round matches of an eight-man “Top Prospect” tournament. QT Marshall, A.C.H., Silas Young, Mike Sydal, Matt Taven, Tadarius Thomas, Adam Page, and Antonio “The Promise” Thomas will compete for a future TV Title Shot.

Also tomorrow, B.J. Whitmer challenges Adam Cole for the Ring of Honor TV Championship. Matt Hardy is set to compete, and he will very likely be involved in the title match to further his rivalry with Cole.

Tag Team action will have a major presence on the show as well, with the newly crowned tag champs The Briscoes defending against the quickly rising tandem of Caprice Coleman and Cedric Alexander. This match came from the conclusion of the three-way tag match at “Final Battle,” where Jay Briscoe promised C&C the first shot at the titles.

In secondary tag team action, a four-team gauntlet is on the bill, with the winner presumably receiving a future title shot. As of press time, the American Wolves are the only team advertised for the gauntlet.

“TD Thomas” goes for gold at home

In what the company is calling an “underdog” challenge, young ROH prospect Tadarius Thomas will challenge world champion Kevin Steen for the title in Dearborn, Mich. on Jan. 18.

Thomas goes into the match with a home field advantage.

Thomas has impressed ROH fans over the past few months with his ability to implement Capoeira, a lethal and astonishing Brazilian martial art, into his pro wrestling arsenal. Thomas will compete in his most high profile match to date in Dearborn.

“Final Battle” sets company record

In its year-end issue, the Wrestling Observer newsletter is reporting that “Final Battle,” because of increased ticket prices, is now the highest grossing Ring of Honor event in history. Considering the questionable business ROH has done in 2012, breaking a record has to be a feel-good end to 2012, at least from a business standpoint.

A True Haas-hole

A quote from the most recent newswire that made me laugh: “Haas has been strongly warned by the corporate office recently that his language and use of the middle finger is not appropriate for broadcast and our editors have to work overtime to edit Charlie Haas segments on TV.”
