Ring of Honor kicked off a new chapter in its future last night, with its first ever TV taping under the Sinclair Broadcasting Group. The show had an excellent card with all three titles being defended. ROH also welcomed back a former star and things are looking very bright for the company. Read below for full SPOILERS!
Nigel McGuinness was announced as Kevin Kelly’s co-commentator before the event started.
Eddie Edwards defeated Michael Elgin w/Truth Martini
Edwards lost the ROH title to his American Wolves team mate Davey Richards at ‘Best In The World’. He faced his toughest test since with a match against ‘Unbreakable’ Michael Elgin. After a hard-hitting match, Edwards was able to get the victory with an avalanche suplex. Roderick Strong hit the ring after the match and went nose-to-nose with Edwards. The House of Truth looked set to attack but Nigel got in the ring and scared them off.
The Briscoes defeated The All Night Express
These two teams have been involved in a long running bloody feud for quite some time now. And now it has spilled onto SBG television. It was yet another close contest between these two well-matched teams but the Briscoes eventually came out on top. Jay hit Kenny King with a low blow when the referee wasn’t looking and got the pin with a small package. After the match, the two teams brawled, Jim Cornette came out and said neither team would be considered #1 contenders after what they just did.
ROH World Title Match
Davey Richards (c) defeated Roderick Strong
Richards won the right to represent Ring of Honor as its World Champion at ‘Best In The World’. These two have had epic battles before and this one was no different. After 20 minutes of back-and-forth action, Richards retained his title after Strong tapped out via an ankle lock. Crowd really backed this one and chants of ‘This is Wrestling!’ broke out. Great debut match for the ROH title on network TV.
Tommaso Ciampa w/The Embassy defeated Andy ‘Right Leg’ Ridge
Ciampa is yet to be pinned in Ring of Honor and he continued his streak at the first TV tapings. His opponent was ROH student Andy Ridge. Ridge has impressed in ROH, most notably on the HDNet show during the ‘Top Prospect Tournament’. Unfortunately for Andy, he came across the most dominant faction in ROH history, Ciampa won with his powerbomb/backbreaker. Steve Corino replaced Nigel on commentary for this match and spoke to Ridge after the match saying he would help him.
ROH World TV Title Match
Jay Lethal defeated El Generico (c)
Generico defeated former champion Christopher Daniels at ‘Best In The World’ and Lethal was getting his first title shot back in ROH since returning at the same event. These two were said to have great chemistry in the ring and the match initially went to a 15 minute time-limit draw. The fans chanted for more and Cornette gave them three more minutes. It was a crazy three minutes of action and Lethal managed to pull out the victory to become the NEW champion!
‘The Prodigy’ Mike Bennett defeated Jimmy Jacobs w/Steve Corino
Bennett was probably the break-out star of the HDNet show and won the ‘Top Prospects Tournament’. He was involved in a lengthy war of words with Steve Corino which ended after Bennett secured several wins. This match was said to be ‘average’ with Bennett getting the win with his side slam.
ROH Tag Team Title Match
Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team defeated The Kings of Wrestling
The Kings set the longest ever Tag Title reign that looked set to go past the year mark. Unfortunately for them, Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin took them on just days before that milestone at ‘Honor Takes Center Stage’ and beat them. WGTT have been dominant since then and the Kings got their rematch in Chicago. The Kings were close to winning the belts on numerous occasions but WGTT managed to pull off the victory eventually. Haas pinned Chris Hero after their Heart Attack double-team manoeuvre.
Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly defeated The Bravado Brothers
Cole & O’Reilly have been the rising stars in Ring of Honor over the past six months or so while The Bravados have just been trying to be booked. The Bravados weren’t happy with their opponents after Lancelot Bravado suffered a concession thanks to Cole & O’Reilly’s punishing kicks. They faced off again and the team of Cole & O’Reilly were once again victorious. The crowd were into them like usual and they finished the Bravados off with their Total Elimination double-team finisher.
It was said that the arena was absolutely packed with easily over 1000 people in attendance.
ROH announced they will return to Chicago Ridge, IL on November 19th!
There were also two dark matches. Grizzly Redwood defeated Tony Kozina with a roll-up and Mike Sydal beat Ernesto Osiris with a standing moonsault after R.D Evans hit Osiris with his show.
