Supercard of Honor VII (4/5/13) Preview

All eyes will be on New York City this weekend as the biggest weekend of the wrestling year is finally upon us. Ring of Honor kicks off the weekend with a stacked card with Supercard of Honor VII from the Hammerstein Ballroom April 5. Fans attending the sold-out show will see a great event with all three titles on the line and talent from around the world being flown in. This show is one of the best of the weekend on paper, and it should deliver nothing but high-quality matches that fans expect from a Supercard.

Let’s take a closer look at each match.

ROH World Championship
Kevin Steen (c) vs. Jay Briscoe

At the 11th Anniversary Show in March, S.C.U.M. invaded after the main event and declared that honor is dead. At the next day’s TV taping, Nigel McGuinness announced a series of title matches to try to get the belt off Steen and away from S.C.U.M. His choice for Supercard of Honor VII is a man who exemplifies honor more so than anyone else on the roster in Jay Briscoe. Briscoe has been around since Day One and is a fan favorite among the ROH faithful. He will look to prove that honor lives in the main event of Supercard of Honor VII.

It won’t be easy for him to pry the title away from Steen, who has been dominant in his almost one year as champion. Steen has defeated everyone who has been placed in front of him since winning the belt, and appears to be stronger than ever with S.C.U.M. expanding in numbers. Steen has been showing a new side recently, though, and is now proud to hold the ROH World Title. That doesn’t make him any less dangerous as he has still shown his demented side while trying to keep his belt.

This will be a great match and is more than worthy of main eventing Supercard of Honor VII. Their styles will mesh well together and it should be a very fun brawl. Briscoe always delivers in title matches, and Steen is one of the most entertaining wrestlers on the planet. Briscoe would be a deserving champion, but Steen will have the advantage as long as S.C.U.M. is on his side.

ROH World Tag Team Championship
Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish (c) vs. The American Wolves

Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish picked up a surprising victory at the 11th Anniversary Show when they defeated the Briscoes to capture the ROH World Tag Team Titles. O’Reilly and Fish earned that title shot by beating the American Wolves in a gauntlet match, but the bad blood between the two teams runs deeper than that. Late last year, O’Reilly and Fish mercilessly mocked Davey Richards. That led to a match at Final Battle 2012 where a reunited American Wolves beat the new pairing of what is now known as redDRagon. O’Reilly and Fish have improved tremendously as a team since then, and will have a chance to prove themselves as the Wolves’ superiors at Supercard of Honor VII.

This is going to be a great match and will be in contention to be the match of the night. These are four of the most talented wrestlers on the roster who have styles that compliment each other perfectly. This is going to be a hard-hitting match that will leave everyone involved worse for wear. This is a rare case where the champions may be the underdogs, but that’s only because they’re going against one of the most decorated tag teams in Ring of Honor history. But redDRagon is still a formidable force, and they won’t go down without a fight.

ROH World TV Championship
Matt Taven (c) vs. Adam Cole vs. Matt Hardy

Matt Taven shocked the world at the 11th Anniversary Show by capturing the ROH World TV Title from Adam Cole. Taven was written off as an afterthought by most people since Cole was set to defend the belt against Matt Hardy the next day. That match still happened, but it wasn’t for a title and ended in a No Contest after chaos broke out due to interference from S.C.U.M. McGuinness announced that both Hardy and Cole will receive a shot at the title at Supercard of Honor VII, and Taven will have the odds stacked against him in his first defense. This has the potential to be a pretty good match. Taven and Cole are extremely talented, and Hardy can put in a good performance when motivated. This match is being overshadowed by the other matches on the card, which could work to its advantage as the expectations aren’t as high as they could be. This match should be a fast-paced and fun match if Taven and Cole are allowed to work the majority of it, which could make this a sleeper match for the show.

Roderick Strong vs. Karl Anderson

Roderick Strong demanded to face the best competition at Supercard of Honor VII, but he may have gotten more than he bargained for when McGuinness announced his opponent is Karl Anderson. Anderson is one of the most accomplished wrestlers in Japan in recent years as he’s held the IWGP and GHC Tag Team Titles, and he challenged for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in Frebruary. He returns to Ring of Honor for the first time over five years for the sold-out event. This should be a fantastic match with two great wrestlers. Strong will be looking to impress McGuinness by defeating a world-traveled wrestler who has succeeded overseas. Anderson will try to continue his hot streak, and a win against Strong will further solidify himself as a championship-level singles wrestler.

ROH vs. SCUM
BJ Whitmer, Caprice Coleman, Cedric Alexander, Mark Briscoe & Mike Mondo
vs. Jimmy Jacobs, Rhino, Rhett Titus, Cliff Compton & Jimmy Rave

S.C.U.M. declared a war on honor at the 11th Anniversary Show when they invaded following the main event. A cavalcade of ROH wrestlers tried to win the battle that night, but S.C.U.M. stood tall to end the night. McGuinness put together a group of wrestlers who have been wronged by S.C.U.M. to battle to invading group. This is going to be a wild and chaotic brawl that will spill all over the Hammerstein Ballroom. While we’ll see scientific and technical wrestling elsewhere on the show, there will be none of that here. This match will consist of two sides willing to do anything to get the advantage in this war. Weapons will be used. Blood will be spilled. But who will fire the next shot in the war between S.C.U.M. and Ring of Honor? We’ll have to wait until Friday to find out.

#1 Contendership Match
Jay Lethal vs. Michael Elgin

A future Ring of Honor World Title opportunity is on the line when Jay Lethal goes one-on-one with Michael Elgin. Both men have had chances to dethrone Steen as champion. Elgin’s chance came in a classic match at Glory by Honor XI last year, while Lethal’s most recent shot came in a losing effort at the 11th Anniversary Show. Now the two will square off for another chance at the championship. This should be an amazing match with two of the best wrestlers on the roster facing off. Lethal has been on fire since adopting a more aggressive style, while Elgin has been the hottest talent on the roster for the better part of a year. Although Lethal is a worthy challenger, this match could be what finally catapults Elgin to becoming the world champion. This is another potential match of the night contender, and could be one of the better matches of the entire weekend.

ACH & Tadarius Thomas vs. QT Marshall & ???

QT Marshall and RD Evans have been teasing a mystery partner for the event. Marshall has mentioned wrestlers such as Alex Shelley as possibly partners, but he could just be blowing smoke. No matter who his partner turns out to be, the tandem will have a tough test as they have to battle Tadarius Thomas and ACH, who have both been impressive since joining the company. ACH has been wowing fans all year and recently earned a ROH World TV match by pinning champion Matt Taven in a Proving Ground match. Thomas has been turning heads as well and he looks to have a bright future in the company. It’s hard to predict who’ll win this match, but it should be interesting to see who Marshall’s partner ends up being.

Ring of Honor presents Supercard of Honor VII Friday April 5th, from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The show is sold-out show begins at 7:30 p.m., and anyone can watch it on iPPV. It’s going to be a great show, so don’t miss out on this special event.
