When the team of Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin lost on their ROH debut, at ‘Glory By Honor IX’, it sent a message to the wrestling world that ROH’s tag division was no joke.
That defeat, back in September, to then-champions Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli. showed everyone, not least Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team themselves, that this nut would be a tough one to crack.
Not only did the loss send the veteran duo back to the drawing board but it also put a major bee in their bonnet. This nagging doubt led to a seven-month-long rivalry between WGTT and the Kings of Wrestling and, fittingly, culminated in the former WWE team dethroning the Kings, at Wrestlemania weekend, in April.
This victory, at ‘Honor Takes Center Stage’, was the second of two one-on-one wins that the now-champions had scored over the KOW, in 2011 (the first being in non-title competition, at ‘SoCal Showdown II’).
At June’s ‘Best In The World 2011’ iPPV event, WGTT and the Kings once again found themselves in competition with one another. This time, as part of a Four Corner Survival match. Haas & Benjamin again left with the gold, much to the chagrin of the Kings.
Now the dawning of a new era is visible on the horizon. The first ROH TV tapings, for the Sinclair Broadcast Group, will take place in Chicago on August 13th. With the promise of three title matches being booked for the tapings, speculation has been running rampant as to who would take on respective champions Davey Richards, El Generico and WGTT.
As of today (July 14th 2011) ROHWorld can report that the first of the title challengers have been named. The main event of the debut SBG episode will be a return match between the 30th champions and their most bitter rivals.
On a show to be televised one year on from WGTT’s ROH debut, the Kings of Wrestling will be looking to repeat the feat that they accomplished back at ‘Glory By Honor IX’, by humbling the veteran unit again and, in doing so, making a second even stronger statement to the wrestling planet.
The Kings’ camp firmly believe that the record-breaking former champions are deserving of one last clean-cut, head-to-head opportunity and the American-Swiss combination are confident that they have the ability to make it count, in front of the Sinclair cameras.
This anticipated rematch will be the perfect showcase of what separates Ring of Honor from the wrestling pack. The talent in the ROH tag ranks is second-to-none and new fans will be in for a real treat, come the inaugural broadcast on September 24th.
Don’t forget to keep an eye on ROHWorld.com, in the coming days, for details of the two further historic title defences, that are set to be signed for these tapings.
