ROH 02/10/19 Bound by Honor Review

ROH 02/10/19 Bound by Honor Review
02/10/19
Watsco Center
Coral Gables, FL

Ian Riccaboni had the weekend off as he is expecting his second child and as such, Nick Aldis and Caprice Coleman were on commentary to start the show. Best wishes to the Riccaboni family.

Rhett Titus vs. Jay Briscoe
Brody King was originally slated to take on Briscoe but his wife was expecting a baby and he was not at the shows on either card this weekend, necessitating a change.Titus grabbed a mic and insulted Jay’s physic to start the match, saying that it looks like he has not worked out since day one.  As if Jay needed a bit more fire, this got him going even more here. Titus was able to hang in there for a bit and was actually able to take control early on as the action spilled outside. Nevertheless, Titus was simply not able to overwhelm one-half of the current tag team champions and a Jay Driller spelled the end of the matchup for the Fittest man in ROH. This was a solid opener-the crowd did not seem to really jump all over Titus as one would expect and as such the match had little heat from the crowd despite the solid action in the ring. Titus continues to be presented as a more serious wrestler despite his persona and it’s working-it just may take a bit of time to rehabilitate what fans had been conditioned to.

Winner: Jay Briscoe

Dalton Castle & The Boys vs. Shinobi Shadow Squad (Cheeseburger, Ryan Nova & Eli Isom)
Both sides adhered to the code of honor before this one got underway and seemed poised for a competitive, but respectful match up. Castle and Nova started off and Castle was in control for his team early but once he tagged out 3S was able to take over and string together some crisp tag team action. Just as Boy 1 was in trouble they pulled Twin Magic and Coleman pulled out a great Killer Bees reference. Commentary spoke to the aggression fro Castle and the Boys and slipped in some talk about the issues the team had after their last showing. Castle started getting very bossy here, demanding a tag in when the Boys seemed to have an easy pin. The time wasted allowed Isom to knock the Boys off the apron and hit his Brainbuster finisher to pick up the pinfall for his squad…shinobi shadow style. Nice crisp match with solid storytelling in the ring and on commentary here.

Winners: Shinobi Shadow Squad

Colt Cabana vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
ZSJ refused the code of honor handshake and then Colt turned up the mind games a bit here before the two then went straight into some great mat based wrestling.Pardon the pun, but this was all about the art of wrestling. Cabana and ZSJ both changed their demeanors multiple times during this match as the two played a game of one-upmanship through. Aldis spoke the words I bet many fans were thinking-that this serious Cabana is a sight to see. Cabana has not gotten enough credit for being able to go from goofy fun loving guy to honorable man defending the rookies and on this night, a veteran who wanted to remind everyone that he’s been doing it a lot longer than ZSJ. The two told an engaging story through the work here and Cabana seemed to be ready to walk away the winner until ZSJ locked on an armbar that Cabana simply could not escape from. This match was layered exquisitely-everything worked in unison to make this a fun match.

Winner: Zack Sabre Jr.

Four Corner Survival Match
Willie Mack vs. Kenny King vs. Silas Young vs. Marty Scurll
Willie Mack has been lights out in his appearances in ROH and this may have been his best performance. Mack had time to shine and flew all over the ring, engaging the rather lethargic crowd with his acrobatics. Despite the fact that Mack was in control for the majority of the match, he did not walk away the victor here. Scurll locked the Chicken Wing on Young and was in line to pick up the submission victory until King slid into the ring. Referee Paul Turner stopped paying attention to the submission to grab the chair and did indeed miss Young tapping. King nailed Scurll with a low blow and then rolled him up with a schoolboy to take the pinfall victory.

Winner: Kenny King

ROH World TV Championship Match
Jeff Cobb(c) vs. Rocky Romero
Going into to the night this match was one that was certainly highlighted as being a MOTN contender. Romero’s surprise victory to earn this seemed to indicate an increased role in the company this year and getting a shot at Cobb, someone who has been presented as nigh invincible, was a sign that his importance in the company was growing. The match confirmed this, as Romero got in more offense against Cobb that anyone else has in the company, with the exception of Shane Taylor. While it never really felt like Romero was going to take the match here both really invested here and it was the most fun match of the night up until this point, yet the crowd still felt a bit subdued. Cobb retained after hitting a Tour of the Islands.

Winner: Jeff Cobb

WOH World Championship Match
Kelly Klein(c) w/ Kamp Klein vs. Mayu Iwatani
The crowd finally seemed to come alive during portions of this match and that is a credit to the work between these two. Iwatani is a fantastic foil to Klein’s dominant heel champion and the story here was that Iwatani seemed to have Klein’s number. The two fought on the outside, with Iwatani launching herself at Klein with a high cross body block, only to be tossed onto her neck with a German suplex. The two beat the count and made it back inside where Iwatani continued to overwhelm Klein. Mayu did have to hit two moonsaults, as the first was not enough to keep Klein down, but it all seemed like a matter of time. An unexpected, exciting result here in an inspired match between these two.

Winner: Mayu Iwatani

Life Blood (Juice Robinson, Mark Haskins, Bandido & Tracy Williams) vs.
Coast to Coast (Leon St. Giovanni & Shaheem Ali ) & The Bouncers (Beer City Bruiser & Brian Milonas
Haskins started off against Ali after both sides adhered to the code of honor.
Fun exchange between LSG and Bandido. Afterward, LSG tagged in Milonas, chuckling to himself as he did. Bandido tried to slam Milonas for some odd reason and despite that not working, he was able to create some space and tag out to Haskins. Milonas was able to recover and sent Haskins to the outside and corralled Haskins into the wrong side of the ring for the British wrestling star. Juice made the hot tag and was loose, as they say. In the end, Bandido hit LSG with a 21 Plex on LSG. Afterward the Bouncers offered a cold one to everyone, indulging in a Toast of Honor.

Winners:  Life Blood

PCO vs. Mark Briscoe
This was exactly what you expected from these two, it was stiff hard-hitting and I cringed more than a few times watching PCO put his body on the line. The two fought all over the place, including brawling to the stage. Referee Todd Sinclair seemingly deciding to allow this to be a no count out match. Mark powerbombed PCO on the stage and then hit a running knee to the head that sent PCO tumbling down the steps. The two eventually made their way back to the ring as Sinclair re-instituted a 20 count. Try as he might, Briscoe could not keep PCO down even after hitting the Froggy-bow. PCO hit two moonsaults for good measure before picking up the win in this one.

Winner: PCO

The Kingdom vs. Jay Lethal, Jonathan Gresham & Rush
The Kingdom once again showed off their tag team synchronicity in this one, working like a well-oiled machine. This has a big match feel-Lethal and Gresham always tag we’ll together and Rush complemented them nicely here. The crowd seemed to wake up a bit for this match and that’s a credit to everyone involved. The ending sequence saw Marseglia and O’Ryan hit House of A Thousand Horses on both Gresh and Rush before setting Lethal up for Rockstar Supernova. Lethal was able to escape that and Taven’s attempt to end the match with the Climax, springboarding into the Lethal Injection. Taven blocked the attempt and hit The Climax to seal the deal and pick up the pinfall victory. After the match, Kenny King came down and ran his mouth about how Lethal lost and that King should be champion. After he and the Kingdom beat down Lethal the entire locker room came out and brawled amongst each other. PCO eventually scaled the turnbuckle and moonsaulted into the entire crowd on the outside as the show went off the air.

Winners: The Kingdom

Final Reaction: C
The show was solid, but nothing really felt like it jumped off the page. The crowd was extremely lackluster- a complete shift from the tour of Texas. Aldis and Coleman did an admirable job on commentary here, but the chemistry of Riccaboni and Cabana was missed and it what at times, especially in front of a like the one here, makes the show much more enjoyable. The main event did feel like it had a big fight feel and the clean win by Taven definitely indicates a future title opportunity down the line. The post-match shenanigans were a bit confusing here-the locker spilled out as if a rumble were going down and without real clear gang warfare here it seemed a bit odd. Cabana and ZSJ sticks out here as the match to watch if you only have time for one.
